The socio-linguistic situation of China – since its first contact with the English-speaking world – has been characterized by an increasingly important role of the English language. This present paper aims to provide the Italian readers a comprehensive view of the evolution of English teaching in China. The historical perspective is integrated with information obtained through interviews and field work. The informants are mainly students of Beijing Foreign Studies University.
