This paper offers a general picture of different legal approaches and responses to the phenomenon of historical pollution in various Countries. After introducing the objectives and methodology of the research, the piece focuses on the concept of historical pollution in the strict sense and in the broad sense and on its empirical dimension. In this regard, the criminal reaction provided by the Italian legal system appears as a significant exception compared to the other legal systems analyzed, and it raises the issue of understanding the efficacy of criminal sanctions in the fight against historical pollution.
