The article gives an interpretation of the history of the Guatemalan nation and of the history of Guatemalan literature through the ethnic struggle between a ruling class of European descent, and an oppressed class of native origin. It shows how the building of the State in Guatemala has failed because there are 4 ethnic groups: Ladino, Mayan, Garifuna and Xinca. It documents how the war of the last part of the XX century resulted in the awareness of the multiethnic nature of the nation and the need for this nation to build a dialogue between ethnic groups.

Abstract
The article gives an interpretation of the history of the Guatemalan nation and of the history of Guatemalan literature through the ethnic struggle between a ruling class of European descent, and an oppressed class of native origin. It shows how the building of the State in Guatemala has failed because there are 4 ethnic groups: Ladino, Mayan, Garifuna and Xinca. It documents how the war of the last part of the XX century resulted in the awareness of the multiethnic nature of the nation and the need for this nation to build a dialogue between ethnic groups.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
