Il concilio lateranense IV e le indulgenze

The examination of the guidelines emerged in the Schools of Paris at the end of the 12th century allows to grasp the importance attributed to the preaching for a general and profound reform of the Church, ideally promoted by innocent III with the IV Lateran Council. The constitutions of this important council treat for the first time with some attention the theme of indulgences, establishing the authorities responsible for their release and the modalities through which they could be lucrate. In view of the development of the plenary indulgences, particular attention is paid to the Constitution 71 (Ad liberandam Terram Sanctam), with which are fixed in detail the conditions necessary to profiting the crusade indulgence, the only one envisaged from the beginning as plenary indulgence and of exclusive papal competence.

L'esame degli orientamenti emersi nelle scuole di Parigi sullo scorcio del XII secolo consente di cogliere l'importanza attribuita alla predicazione in vista di una generale e profonda riforma della vita della Chiesa, idealmente promossa da Innocenzo III con il IV concilio lateranense, Le costituzioni di tale importante assise trattano per la prima volta con una certa attenzione il tema delle indulgenze, stabilendo le autorità competenti per il loro rilascio nonché le modalità attraverso le quali potevano essere lucrate. In considerazione dello sviluppo delle indulgenze plenarie particolare attenzione è rivolta alla costituzione 71 (Ad liberando Terram Sanctam), con la quale si fissano in modo dettagliato le condizioni necessarie per lucrare l'indulgenza crociata, l'unica prevista fin dall'inizio come indulgenza plenaria e di esclusiva competenza papale.
