«Volo procedere mansuetudine potius quam rigore». Onorio III: un’introduzione

After identifying the useful Historiography for the reconstruction of the pontificate of Honorius III, the reasons behind the substantial historiographic misfortune of this pope are considered. To obscure the fame of Honorius III was, first of all, his unfamiliarity to the circles related to the schools of theology of Paris. Secondly, his pontificate was compared with that of his great predecessor: Innocent III. Honorius III can reasonably be considered among the most important popes of the 13th century, if only one considers that he owes himself to the great turning point in religious life, marked by the approval of the Mendicant Orders. He also committed himself to realize the constitutions of the Fourth Lateran Council, among these the Crusade was at the first place. He was also able in avoiding the rupture with Frederick II. It was his successor, Gregory IX, to proceed in an attempt to obscure the memory of his predecessor, in order to exalt the deeds of his relative and predecessor in the Papacy, innocent III

Dopo aver individuato i contributi utili per la ricostruzione del pontificato di Onorio III, vengono considerati i motivi alla base della sostanziale sfortuna storiografica di questo papa. A oscurare la fama di Onorio III furono, in primo luogo, la sua estraneità rispetto ai circoli legati alle scuole di teologia di Parigi, quindi il confronto con il pontificato del suo grande predecessore Innocenzo III. Onorio III può a ragione essere considerato tra i più importanti papi del XIII secolo, se solo si considera che a lui si deve la grande svolta nella vita religiosa, segnata dall'approvazione degli Ordini mendicanti. Egli si impegnò anche nella realizzazione delle deliberazioni del IV concilio lateranense, segnatamente la crociata, e tal fine riuscì a evitare la rottura con Federico II. Fu poi il successore, Gregorio IX, a procedere nel tentativo di oscurare la memoria del suo predecessore, al fine di esaltare le gesta del suo congiunto e predecessore nel papato, Innocenzo III.
