Among the “figurae” of Joachim of Fiore, trees are especially numerous and important. The peculiarity of these images consists in the symbolic articulation of their diagrammatic structure: theological themes are developed and explicated by means of diagrams and symbols. This essay explains these aspects. It also gives an example, namely the tree of patriarchs and religious orders, which illustrates the development of Joachim’s ideas regarding the place within salvation history of monastic life in general, and the Cistercian Order in particular.

Abstract
Among the “figurae” of Joachim of Fiore, trees are especially numerous and important. The peculiarity of these images consists in the symbolic articulation of their diagrammatic structure: theological themes are developed and explicated by means of diagrams and symbols. This essay explains these aspects. It also gives an example, namely the tree of patriarchs and religious orders, which illustrates the development of Joachim’s ideas regarding the place within salvation history of monastic life in general, and the Cistercian Order in particular.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
