The chapter introduces the current debate on the definition(s) of social capital and outlines the origins of the concept, together with providing a reading of major interpretations, with the objective of accounting for the debate on this useful, fascinating yet controversial concept. Lastly, the chapter illustrates the latest development and uses of the concept, with particular reference to the social changes introduced by the massive digitalisation and spread of new media and technologies.
