The essay offers an overview of the history of the social theater, highlighting its peculiar methodological characteristics. The roots of social theater are in the theatrical experiences of the '60s and' 70s, linked to the Nuovo Teatro Italiano, the theatrical animation and the theater of the base groups. Some emblematic experiences and application areas are mentioned. Finally identifies the methodological criteria which include: the subjects involved, their participation attorale and autorale, the performative processes and outcomes, the choice of space and time, the relationship with the socio-cultural context and the evolutionary features that the social theater accomplishes.
