The transition from adolescence to adulthood is an increasingly long and diffuse process. Although family transitions and relational projects remain a latent reality among young people, there is little clarity about the obstacles they face around these life decisions, especially in southern European contexts like Spain. The general objective of the research is to make a first approximation to the marital beliefs, concerns (i.e., priorities) and relational commitment of Spanish young adults, as well as a more qualitative exploration of the meaning of commitment and marriage. To contrast this empirical evidence with some of the main theories and explanations of these social trends. The aim is to understand the relational, marital, and family aspects of this period, considering not only the structural factors but also young people’s reflexivity, in order to identify the obstacles they may face in the realization of their life plans. This thesis contributes to this discussion by examining the marital beliefs, concerns and commitment of emerging adults using three methodological approaches. Study 1 used a representative national sample to identify the different marital paradigms in the Spanish population and associated sociodemogrpahic and concerns. Study 2 explored the relationship between concerns, commitment and flourishing for people in a relationship. For study 3 semi-structured interviews were analyzed using framework analysis in order to identify meanings of commitment and marriage. Together, results suggest that the marital paradigm is a valuable tool to study beliefs and concerns about marriage. And that these aspects have important implications when studying romantic relationships and family transitions in social contexts like the Spanish one. Both theoretical and practical implications are discussed across these studies.

Abstract
Both theoretical and practical implications are discussed across these studies.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
