This thesis joins the ongoing conversation on innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Specifically, the aim of this dissertation is to examine innovation in SMEs from a multi-lateral perspective that can help an in-depth investigation of such a complex issue. This objective will be achieved through three empirical qualitative papers focused on the analysis of innovation in three research settings: micro-firms, SMEs in traditional, low-tech industries, and family SMEs. The order with which the three papers are presented follows an approach from the general to the specific. Indeed, it starts with a paper focused on the identification of the role of networks for innovation in micro-firms, to delve deeper into how these firms frame innovation decisions and to enrich our understanding of the triggers of innovation. Then, the role of ‘tradition’ and the interplay between tradition and innovation are investigated in the second paper, which offers an empirical analysis of the management of innovation in traditional and low-tech industries. Finally, the third paper focuses on a specific type of innovation, i.e., digitalization, in the specific context of family SMEs.

Abstract
Finally, the third paper focuses on a specific type of innovation, i.e., digitalization, in the specific context of family SMEs.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
