Research reports a relationship between impulsive behaviors and unhealthy eating behaviors. Serious games, combining educational contents with gamification, can increase engagement in therapeutic activities and behavioral training programs. In this context, we have developed a Serious Game to promote healthy eating style in children and adolescents in which impulsivity is a predominant feature, specifically individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. An initial analysis of the usability of the Serious Game was performed on a sample of 12 participants by means of quantitative and qualitative measures. Participants' feedback, which was overall positive, was helpful for defining the required improvements. Once implemented, the serious game will be then proposed to children and their families and included in home-based educational interventions.

Despite an increasing scholarly attention on innovation in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), we still know relatively little about the factors motivating and supporting innovation in such firms. This qualitative study joins this conversation by investigating the controversial role played by networks in fostering innovation in the specific context of micro-firms. Building on 32 semi-structured interviews conducted with micro-entrepreneurs and network managers, our results identify several influencing factors carrying both a positive and a negative effect on innovation and detect three main ways in which micro-entrepreneurs make sense of the network’s influence on the overall innovation process. This study offers two primary contributions. First, we shed light on the varying effects of the network’s characteristics on innovation in micro-firms. Second, we further our understanding of how micro-entrepreneurs frame the role of networks in driving innovation. Thus, we develop a framework on the joint effect of network-level characteristics and the micro-entrepreneur’s sensing of the network’s role as key drivers of the impact of networks on innovation in micro-firms.

The role of the economy in Athenian politics has been prominent since the
second half of the fifth century BC. The consideration of the political and
financial crises that affected Athens has made it possible to detect significant
changes in the management of financial resources between the fifth and
fourth centuries. We will try to demonstrate how, often, a state of emergency
has led to change, even in the long term, transforming initially extraordinary
institutions into indispensable means for maintaining the management of the
economy. The establishment of extraordinary magistracies, the specialization
of public offices, the complexity reached by the Athenian financial system are
a non-negligible index.

INTRODUCTION: To date, there has been little agreement on circadian variation in sports performance. It seems that both chronotype and
habitual training time-of-day (HTT) need to be considered when assessing diurnal variation in performance [1]. Therefore, the aim of this
study was to evaluate if chronotype and HTT may influence the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) after two different intensity trials performed in three times of day.
METHODS: The chronotype of participants (N56: age 23.8±2.1 yrs, BMI 22.1±2.0 kg/m2, V’O2max 40.1±9.1 ml/kg/min) was assessed using
the Morningness Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) [2] and their maximal oxygen uptake (V’O2max) was determined via direct gas analysis
(Fitmate-Pro, Cosmed, Italy) on a cycle ergometer (LC6, Monark, Sweden) using a submaximal exercise-based protocol. Subjects’ HTT was
objectively evaluated using an activity monitor (Lifecorder Plus, Kenz, Japan) worn for one week. Participants performed two 6-minute
bouts of exercise on cycle ergometer at 60% and 90% of V’O2max at 8.30am (morning trial, MT), at 1.00pm (afternoon trial, AT) and at
5.30pm (evening trial, ET) in a randomised order. Training sessions were interspersed by 48 hours. After each session, participants reported
their RPE (CR10) [3]. RESULTS: Distributions of chronotype and HTT were 27% of Morning-types (M-type), 59% of Neither-types (N-type) and 14% of Eveningtypes (E-type) and 21% of subjects trained in the morning, 55% in the afternoon and 23% in the evening, respectively. When the RPE of all
the subjects were examined as a whole, there was no difference between the MT, the AT and the ET (60% V’O2max MT: 3.0±1.5, AT:
2.9±1.4, ET: 2.8±1.5; 90% V’O2max MT: 7.3±2.4, AT: 7.1±2.4, ET: 7.0±2.3). No time-by-group interaction effect on RPE was observed when
participants were grouped by chronotype (60% V’O2max p=0.2931; 90% V’O2max p=0.7653) or HTT (60% V’O2max p=0.9370; 90%
V’O2max p=0.9862). However, M-type reported lower RPE scores post MT and E-type post ET both at moderate (60% V’O2max Mtype_MT: 2.6±1.1, AT: 3.3±1.7, ET: 3.1±1.5; E-type_ MT: 3.3±2.0, AT: 2.7±0.9, ET: 2.6±1.8) and vigorous (90% V’O2max M-type_MT:
6.8±2.7, AT: 7.3±2.8, ET: 7.4±2.1; E-type_ MT: 7.4±2.2, AT: 7.0±1.9, ET: 6.4±2.5) exercise intensity. Interestingly, the same trend was not
observed for RPE and HTT.
CONCLUSION: In contrast to previous study findings [1], neither chronotype nor HTT have significantly influenced diurnal variation in RPE.
Nevertheless, the lowest RPE scores found post MT for M-type and post ET for E-type, regardless of their HTT, seem to suggest that only
chronotype might influence RPE. Future research needs to confirm this hypothesis

In response to an increasingly ageing world population, the World Health Organization has recently proposed a new framework – called Healthy Ageing – to better cater to older adults’ life needs and desires. This framework calls for transdisciplinary approaches to answer the challenges and opportunities posed by an ageing society. Following this framework, it is argued that the first step to accomplishing the goals of Healthy Ageing is to address the existing biases and stereotypes in the language used for addressing ageing issues. In this paper, we propose a series of linguistic guidelines that can help improve the lexicon used to talk about ageing in design research and practice, by countering many subconscious ageist biases and stereotypes. Ageism, especially in its implicit form, is a pervasive negative force that can affect not only design practitioners and researchers but also older adults, who often use ageist language to describe themselves. The proposed guidelines would also help the “false friends” of ageing people, who may be using apparently innocuous words, terminology, and remarks to refer to ageing, without perhaps realising the underlying ageist attitudes and stereotypes hidden in their used language. Overall, we aim to foster a change in design researchers’ and practitioners’ perspective on ageing, by paving the way for a transdisciplinary discourse on designing for ageing, which could then be further expanded and explored to eliminate ageism in design.

The fast charging of a lithium-ion battery is a complex task, which needs to be addressed by a proper control methodology to find the highest charging current while guaranteeing safety. Among the different approaches, model predictive control appears particularly suitable due to its ability in dealing with nonlinear systems and constraints. However, its use in a realistic scenario is limited due to the high computational burden required by the online solution of an optimal control problem. To overcome this issue, we consider a neural network-based algorithm, which can reduce the online computational effort by approximating the solution of the model predictive control. Such a deep learning-based approach is here applied for the first time to the real-time management of a lithium-ion cell, described by an electrochemical model with thermal dynamics. The results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in terms of computational burden reduction.

Technology opens up new possibilities for designing and constructing increasingly phygital, digital and physical buildings made of “bits and atoms” (Gaggioli 2017). Phygital buildings can: capture people while they inhabit the place; automate processes and decrease the amount of people mediation required; empower human behaviours, making human-machine interaction natural and multimodal. Designing phygital buildings is a challenging path that requires the skills of different practitioners: as discussed in this paper, not only architects, building engineers, and ICT experts but also the client –who is co-creator–, UX designers, business designers, and social psychologists.
This contribution – part of the TECVAL-InterPhy research project– argues that to realise a phygital building, it is not enough for the project team to be multidisciplinary –simplicity–, i.e., to bring together practitioners with different skills. The team should go beyond disciplines, becoming ultradisciplinary –chaos– (Leoni, 2020), opening a breach to explore outside and between the disciplines involved, and sensemaking in the chaos. Ultra means going beyond, out or more than (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Consequently, an ultradisciplinary perspective “cares not at all where knowledge comes from” (Clarke 2011). The practitioners of an ultrateam master their disciplines and navigate freely and are curious about other disciplines. They are not know-it-alls. Instead, they master nano degrees, which are bits of knowledge for experimenting with innovation.
How is such freedom possible? Only through an orientation to the intercomprehension on the communicative level and the intersubjectivity on the level of the professional interactions, project teams will be able to assume an ‘ultradisciplinary stance’ (Batty 2017).
The paper supports this point of view with theoretical reflections emerging from literature review and practice-centred considerations from direct observation and desk analysis of concepts and realisations of phygital buildings in Italy, which are examples of ultraluoghi –ultraplaces– (Galimberti et al. 2019).

The excavations carried out by the Centro Studi Lunensi on behalf of Soprintendenza Archeologica of Liguria in the early Christian and Medieval Cathedral of Luni have evidenced that the first cult building is the result of the modification of a vast domus with different phases until late iV century (the house of ‘ocean’). The archaeological operations discovered about sixty graves, placed inside and outside the church as well. Since no finds were available, it was possible to determinate their chronology only according to stratigraphic data. Waiting for the results of the anthropological and archeometrical analysis of the bone remains, the study of the burials made possible to observe their distribution in relationship to the chronological evolution of the complex. The oldest graves (second half VII - ante IX century?) are housed inside the church, other more recent graves (post XI century) are located in the area in front of the facade, whereas later graves (post XII century) are placed in the southern outside area, which was further analysed in october - november
2017. This article aims to illustrate both the new data produced by these excavations in comparison with what previous investigations had already revealed, as well as the reasons of the chronological uncertainties about the periodization; finally, to present the discovery, in an annexed outside apse, of a body buried with golden spurs and spears, probably a high-rank member of the feudal aristocracy who ruled between the XI and XII century.

Learning analytics, an emerging field in educational science, leverages data-driven insights to significantly enhance the teaching and learning experience in the context of higher education. It acts as a transformative catalyst, reshaping how educators and institutions perceive and enrich students' learning journeys. By harnessing data from diverse sources, including learning management systems, student interactions, and assessments, learning analytics provides profound insights into student performance, engagement, and behavior. These, in turn, help educators make well-informed decisions to optimize teaching methods, personalize instruction, and ultimately improve overall student achievement. This pilot case study describes the deployment and impact of learning analytics tools at a higher education institution in a master's degree program primarily focused on improving teaching practices. Its purpose is to highlight the benefits and challenges for both instructors and students associated with integrating learning analytics in higher education. The key question addressed by this study is: how does learning analytics influence student success, teaching methodologies, and institutional effectiveness in higher education, and how can its implementation be fine-tuned to unlock its full potential? The assessment encompasses different aspects, including course design, student engagement levels, and instructor-student interactions, to measure the tangible effects of using learning analytics. A section of the paper will describe the technical infrastructure and processes used to create the dataset from which the metrics were extracted. The findings from this case study demonstrate the capacity of learning analytics to provide valuable insights into student performance, engagement, and learning behaviors. Professors involved in this pilot case study observed a significant improvement in their teaching practices through the early identification of low-performing or at-risk students and the subsequent timely adoption of appropriate educational measures to meet their needs. We believe that this work will help strengthen our university’s existing strategy to further promote the use of learning analytics in optimizing resource allocation, designing curricula, identifying at-risk students, improving the quality of education, and providing students with tools to enhance their educational journey and performance. The overarching goal is the establishment of a data architecture capable of generating role- and context-based dashboards for our key stakeholders, including students, faculty, and management. Our broader goal is to foster a data culture and promote data-driven decision-making within our institution.

Walnuts are considered a super food for their nutritional value and for their given health benefits. This type of nut is characterized by the presence of a cuticle that covers the kernels: the episperm. This cuticle is rich in fibers and antioxidants both important compounds for the nutritional value of the dried fruit. However, walnut episperm can negatively affect the taste, the color, and the rheology of derivative products.
The aim of this study was to investigate and prove the possibility to remove the episperm of the kernels through a simple and efficient technique. This kind of process should not damage the product, and it should also guarantee a good chemical profile and rheological stability of the products that can be obtained from walnuts, in particular the paste.
Different kinds of treatments have been tested to identify which combinations of temperature, time, and/or blanching solutions better work on the walnuts. Once individuated the best separation technique, this was applied on walnuts that were later processed to obtain a walnut paste. The final product was finally analyzed from a chemical, physical, ad rheological point of view to understand the effect of the episperm separation on the paste characteristics.
The nuts were characterized before each treatment evaluating moisture content, water activity, ashes, fats, proteins, pH and total acidity, color, antioxidant capacity, polyphenol content, and lipid oxidation (conjugated dienes and trienes, peroxide values). After characterization, different pre-treatments were applied on the walnuts such as: roasting, blast chiller, soaking, blanching with different solutions (HCl, NaOH, NaHCO3, citric and ascorbic acid, at different concentrations), and steam blanching. The walnuts were then blown with compressed air to be peeled. Once individuated two optimal techniques, the treated walnuts were processed to obtain a paste that was characterized through the evaluation of moisture content, water activity, ashes, fats, proteins, pH and total acidity, color, antioxidant capacity, polyphenol content, and lipid oxidation (conjugated dienes and trienes, peroxide values, and Oxitest) aiming to check the impact of the peeling.
The samples were analyzed also from a rheological point of view through both rotational and oscillatory modes (flow curves, amplitude and frequency sweep tests) to define the stability of the obtained paste, and the effect given on the product by the applied peeling technique.
According to the obtained results, it was possible to establish that roasting and chilling treatments were fundamental as they differently impact on thermal expansion coefficients of seed and seed coat. In particular, the pre-treatment consisting only in roasting the kernels and the soaking technique with 1% of baking soda (followed by a final roasting) were those that gave the best peeling rates on the walnut kernels: both methods yield pastes that were stable from a chemical and rheological point of view.
Through this kind of study, it was possible to evidence how the peeling treatment applied on the walnut kernels can really affect the chemical and rheological stability of a walnut paste. For this reason, it is fundamental to find a feasible and effective separation technique that can be useful also in the food industry.
Further studies will be necessary to better investigate the stability also through an accelerated shelf-life study and a sensory analysis to obtain important information related to the impact of the peeling treatment on the product taste and on its stability in the long term.

Optimal subset selection without outliers

Settore SECS-S/01 - STATISTICA
With the advent of ‘Big Data’, massive data sets are becoming increasingly prevalent. Several
subdata selection are proposed in these last few years both to reduce the computational burden and
to improve cost effectiveness and learning of the phenomenon. Some of these proposals (Drovandi
et al., 2017; Wang et al., 2019; Deldossi and Tommasi (2021) among others) are inspired to Optimal
Experimental Design (OED). However, differently from the OED context - where researchers have
typically complete control over the predictors - in subsampling methods these, and the responses
as well, are passively observed. Thus if outliers are present in the ‘Big Data’, it is likely that they
could be included in the sample selected applying the D-criterion, being the D-optimal design
points on the boundary of the design space.
In regression analysis, outliers - and more in general influential points – could have a large impact
on the estimates; identify and exclude them in advance, especially in large datasets, is generally
not an easy task. In this study, we propose an exchange procedure to select a compromise-optimal
subset which is informative for the inferential goal and avoids outliers and ‘bad’ influential points

The European hazelnut is sensitive to water stress given its low capacity of stomatal control and its shallow root system, which spreads mainly in the top 0.4-0.5 m of soil depth. Climatic summer stress is detrimental to hazelnut yield, especially in the second half of July and the first half of August, when maximum oil accumulation in the kernel occurs. In this study, grafted and own-rooted young hazelnut plants of three high-quality cultivars were cultivated in central Italy to investigate possible differences in growth and production in the first eight years after planting. The grafting of C. avellana on C. colurna rootstock affects both vegetative development and nut production. Grafted plants of ‘Tonda Romana’ were most productive, showing a very positive effect on yield of this cultivar. In general, the higher vegetative and productive growth of adult grafted plants in the eighth year after planting shows the close affinity between the two species. A positive influence on yield for a longer period of time is expected in grafted hazelnut plants.

In Italy, in June 1955 an agreement was signed with the USA, according to which part of the American food surplus would find a suitable form of use in our Country. In the following three years, large quantities of food from overseas were allocated by the International Aid Administration (IAA) to poor children assisted in the school canteens. The paper intends to present how the IAA plan took shape in the late 1950s, studying the educational material used in the Italian primary schools. In addition to reporting on the national situation, an in-depth analysis will be conducted on the experience of the school canteens in Piacenza, a city in northern Italy. The analysis of unpublished document from the City Archive, including school notebooks, filmstrips, brochures and posters, will bring to light how the IAA initiatives were realized at a local level, and, above all, what was the reaction of students and teachers.

Settore M-PSI/02 - PSICOBIOLOGIA E PSICOLOGIA FISIOLOGICA
This study investigated the neurophysiological correlates underlying the normative judgment of professionals in the legal field and in other professional contexts during the performance of daily work activities with high decision-making impact. A sample of 20 experienced professionals (10 in the legal and 10 in the non-legal field) were asked to fill in a diary of their activities during two different days indicating for each activity the level of intensity perceived in terms of decision-making (from low to high decision-making impact). Meanwhile, their neurophysiological correlates were collected with an electroencephalographic wearable device. Results highlighted a greater activity of delta and theta band in the temporoparietal region during the performance of activities with a high decision-making impact on their jobs. For the legal professionals, compared to others, an increase in theta activity in the temporo-parietal region and alpha in the antero-frontal region was found, suggesting greater involvement of emotional and attentional processes during activities involving moral and normative judgment. This evidence could be considered as the first neurophysiological markers of the decision-making and reasoning process of the legal operators involved in the legal processes.

At organizational level, it is of paramount importance to grasp the micro-foundation of individual drivers
of sustainable behavior, which takes place when collective interest prevails over individual one. Although is
it known that employees’ involvement and engagement at work play a crucial role at promoting prosocial
organizational outcomes and actions that may benefit the organization, the present study aims to analyze
the psychometric properties of a new metric specifically designed to assess employees’ motives behind the
orientation towards the organizational common good. Such new metric (O-CGP) has been adapted for the
organizational context based on the Common Good Provision scale (CGP, Castiglioni et al., 2019). Both
exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were undertaken to validate and improve the scale. The final
scale, which consists of eight items, contains two dimensions as the original one: Accessibility (i.e., making
the common good accessible to anyone in the company and fulfilling employee’s basic needs) and Personal
Gain (i.e., getting a return and personal advantage in exchange for one’s contribution). The psychometric
properties of the scale are further explored in relation to other organizational constructs.

Typology, chronology, and phonetic mechanisms of Finnic secondary gemination in the light of Soikkola Ingrian acoustic data

Settore L-LIN/01 - GLOTTOLOGIA E LINGUISTICA
Secondary gemination is a remarkable but little-known phonological process of singleton consonant lengthening into geminates in certain prosodic positions in Finnic languages. Its phonetic premises, typology, and chronology are still understudied. The aim of the paper is twofold. First, it summarises the main facts about secondary gemination and its place within general prosodic tendencies observed in Finnic languages. Second, it uses acoustic data from Soikkola Ingrian, which manifests one of the most developed Finnic systems of secondary gemination, to argue about the relative chronology and phonetic mechanisms of this gemination. The conclusion is that the phonetic duration of phonologised secondary geminates cannot be used as an argument for their age, because, as our acoustic data in [1] showed, their duration is regulated by compensatory stress-induced shortening as a function of the foot structure. On the other hand, the atypical prosodic positions of trisyllabic secondary gemination in Soikkola Ingrian can indeed suggest the younger age of this particular type of gemination.

The Evolution of University Technology Transfer towards Involvement with Industry: the Case of the Politecnico di Torino
Augusto Cocorullo
VIDAL J. VIEIRA M.J. FERREIRA C.
Cocorullo, Augusto
Settore SPS/09 - SOCIOLOGIA DEI PROCESSI ECONOMICI E DEL LAVORO
The Italian university scene was strongly influenced by the advent of so-called “knowledge society” that has resulted in a substantial transformation of the main institutions of knowledge production, including universities, in terms of services to offer and functions to performer, in order to give concrete answers to the increasingly insistent demands from society: not only traditional education of young people and the production of knowledge, but also training for life-long learning, continuous training and upgrading, advice, assistance and technology transfer, new modes of knowledge production. Moreover, ever the past three decades, university research activities have increasingly become organized around economic imperatives. Therefore, in this paper it is analyzed the case of the Politecnico di Torino and of I3P, the Innovative Enterprise Incubator of the Politecnico di Torino, in terms of connection with the economic environment, in the light of the idea that changes in technology have enhanced the connections between research universities and economic policies (Geiger 2006). I3P’s mission is to promote the creation of new science-based businesses with validated growth potential, either founded by university researchers or entrepreneurs from outside the university sphere. I3P provides open spaces and professional consulting services to start business as well as a network of entrepreneurs, managers and investors. Founded on 1999, I3P is located in Torino (Italy) and by now has launched 160 start-ups that have been able to exploit the results of research in different fields: from cleantech to medtech, from Information Technology to electronics, mechanical, energy, to other industrial. Its mission is to promote the creation of new science-oriented firms with high-growth potential. The activity of I3P follows the global strategies of the Piedmont region, in order to sustain research, technology innovation and new entrepreneurship. Specifically it aims to: provide consulting services during the enterprise creation process (these services are free of charge); manage a network and a high profile marketplace involving entrepreneurs, managers and investors; provide a location for enterprises to create reciprocal synergies.

Objective: This project was devised for evaluating and highlighting the impact of COVID-19 on the management of basic and clinical research activities conducted by the Italian laboratories of neuroscience, neurophysiology, and clinical neuropsychology during the pandemic and post-emergency phases.
Participants and Methods: A total of 254 laboratories/units have been mapped on the Italian territory and clustered based on location, primary research field, and category of institution. A survey was designed including five different sections: i) consensus and introduction; ii) general data con the institution and the respondent and pre-pandemic phase; iii) research activity during Phase 1 – first lockdown (from February to May 2020); iv) research activity during Phase 2 – second lockdown (October 2020 to May 2021); and v) summary
evaluations of the pandemic period (overall considerations regarding both Phase 1 and Phase 2). The survey was implemented on the Qualtrics XM platform and sent to the mapped centers and disseminated through the main Italian neuropsychological scientific societies.
Results: Focusing on the sample of survey respondents, which almost equally represented primarily healthcare/clinical research professionals (53%) and primarily basic research professionals (47%), it is relevant to note that just about one-fourth of them reported the existence of emergency management guidelines to help strategic decision-making and inform the rearrangement of lab/unit activities in case of a disease outbreak, a percentage that has grown up to 94% after the COVID-19 emergency. This led to a closure rate equal to 92% for purely research laboratories/units during Phase 1, compared to 52% of mixed clinical and research units and 60% of primarily clinical units. A similar –though more restrained– scenario was observed even in Phase 2, with 44% of purely research units still closed, vs. 5% of mixed units and 10% or primarily clinical ones. Another impactful observation emerging from the survey is that, while the number of submitted research articles during phase1 and 2 was almost comparable to a previous reference period (year 2019), the investigated research and clinical institutions reported a remarkable decrease of 23% for planned and submitted projects, a percentage that reaches -40% in mixed clinical-research units.
Conclusions: We suggest that such loss of research projects in the field of basic, clinical, and applied neurosciences, of their potential outcomes in terms of novel theoretical models and technological/methodological progress, as well as of potential by-side discoveries might show its potentially detrimental effects in the next few years. Defining guidelines and new best practices for efficient and sustainable management of these necessary activities in the short and long term is a current critical challenge and might help containing the cost of their interruption on healthcare for the population and on individual/social well-being.

In

Introduction A proliferation of nicotine use in the sport environment has been observed in recent years mainly as smokeless tobacco
(Zandonai et al., 2013). Nicotine has been listed in World Anti-doping Agency’s Monitoring Program from 2012 to 2015 in order to detect
potential patterns of abuse. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Snus (SS), an oral smokeless tobacco, on the perception
of fatigue during aerobic exercise to TTE. Methods The study was a double-blind placebo controlled (SP) crossover design. Fourteen
healthy male non-smokers were recruited. Subjects were studied during three sessions on cycle-ergometer: experimental session 1 (Exp1)
consisted in an incremental exercise test to determine maximal aerobic power (Wmax); Exp2 and Exp3 consisted in exercise at 65% Wmax until exhaustion in SS or SP conditions. During the Exp2 and Exp3, muscle and cerebral oxygenation by means of NIRS (nearinfrared
spectroscopy) and global rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded. Before and after all experiments, the Profile of Mood
of State questionnaire (POMS) was administered to subjects. Subjects were then tested by means of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
(TMS) to assess changes in cortico-motor excitability due to the prolonged exercise. Results Time to exhaustion (TTE) was not significant
difference (64.4 ± 41.5 min SS; 51.6 ± 17.2 min SP) (19.2%) in paired Student’s t-test. RPE in the first 30 minutes during both of the sessions
showed a significant difference after 10 minutes from start exercise. POMS questionnaire values did not show any significant differences
under both conditions (SS, SP). We found significant differences in the cerebral and muscular tissues oxygenation levels in the first 30
minutes of the exercise during SS and SP tests. In particular, at cerebral level, tissue oxygenation index was significantly larger in SS than
in SP from the 10th to 30th min of exercise. Conclusion The study showed that the SS effect, compared to placebo condition, could not be
an improvement of fatigue during an endurance exercise until exhaustion despite of an increase in tissue muscular and cerebral oxygenation.
These data supported the hypothesis of a major activity induced by nicotine as a central stimulator (Mundel and Jones, 2006).

Targeting mitochondrial dysfunction to treat sarcopenia: Opportunities and challenges
Marzetti, E.
Marzetti, Emanuele
Settore MED/09 - MEDICINA INTERNA
Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and function, imposes a dramatic burden on individuals and society. The development of preventive and therapeutic strategies against sarcopenia is therefore perceived as an urgent need by health professionals and has instigated intensive research on the pathophysiology of this syndrome. The pathogenesis of sarcopenia is multifaceted and encompasses lifestyle habits, systemic factors (e.g., chronic inflammation and hormonal alterations), local environment perturbations (e.g., vascular dysfunction), and intramuscular specific processes. In this scenario, derangements in skeletal myocyte mitochondrial function are recognized as major factors contributing to the age-dependent muscle degeneration. The presentation will summarize prominent findings and controversial issues on the contribution of specific mitochondrial processes – including oxidative stress, quality control mechanisms and apoptotic signalling – on the development of sarcopenia. Methodological and safety considerations for the design of clinical trials targeting mitochondrial dysfunction to treat sarcopenia will be discussed. Special emphasis will be placed on the importance of monitoring the effects of an intervention on muscle mitochondrial function and identifying the optimal target population for the trial.

Modern energy systems are increasingly vital for the delivery of various essential services.
These services include clean water, sanitation, healthcare, reliable and efficient lighting, heating, cooking, mechanical power, transportation, and telecommunications.
The adoption of modern energy systems has resulted in notable enhancements in the quality of life for a significant portion of the global population. Typically, an energy system encompasses a complex and comprehensive structure that considers various elements
such as energy production, transformation, transport, and distribution. In recent times, a great importance has been devoted to energy security, which is essential for the well-being associated with energy. Energy security involves two main aspects: longterm investments to align energy supply with economic and environmental needs, and short-term focus on the energy system’s ability to respond swiftly to supply-demand shifts and maintain resilience. Furthermore, it is crucial to establish a strong connection between energy security and climate change mitigation initiatives. Indeed, as highlighted in [9], in order to maximize the effectiveness of their energy policy, nations must integrate considerations of energy security and climate change mitigation priorities concurrently.
Countries should prioritize both to optimize their energy policies’ efficiency,
as referenced in . Energy access also presents a significant issue of inequality, with uneven distribution of energy sources across the globe. This lack of equitable access to energy sources poses challenges for sustainable development (see [13], [14] and [7]).
Several factors drive the evaluation of energy system resilience and guide policymakers towards sustainable policies. These include energy consumption, the transfer of direct and indirect energy resources through international trade, transitioning to renewable energies, and promoting environmental sustainability.
In this context, it is common practice to focus solely on direct energy. However, it is important to recognize that the production of goods and services also involves indirect energy. This indirect energy, also known as embodied energy, refers to the energy consumed during the production of goods and services that is required to create the final product (see [2] and [15]).
The literature extensively examines the concept of energy embodied in international trade ([12], [17] and [18]). Interdependencies between industries within the economy has been initially depicted by Leontief, showcasing how the output of one sector can serve as an input for another sector, as discussed in [10] and [11]. Building upon this foundation, an extended input-output analysis (EEIOA) has been developed to assess
the environmental and social impact of economic activities, including the extraction and depletion of natural resources. This approach has been utilized in studying the interconnected and intricate flows of embodied energy in international trade from a network perspective. Numerous tools have been employed to examine direct energy commodity trade networks and explore the characteristics of embodied energy in trade at global,
national, and regional levels, as seen in [3], [5], [8] and [19]. However, the conventional monoplex network representation used in the literature fails to capture the joint interaction between sectors and countries, as it primarily focuses on either country-level or sector-level analysis. To address this limitation, more recent approaches, such as the one presented in [4], have adopted a multilayer network framework to provide a more
comprehensive understanding of this complex topic.
In this work, we expand upon the approach presented in [4] by considering various types of embodied energy sources and incorporating the temporal evolution of interactions between sectors and countries. Specifically, we focus on analyzing the flow of embodied energy within temporal multilayer networks, differentiated by renewable and non-renewable sources. We build upon existing methodologies outlined in [3] and [4]
by calculating the embodied energy flows for each combination of countries and sectors in each time period, taking into account different energy sources. For a given time and energy source, these flows are used to construct a directed and weighted multilayer network, where sectors/industries serve as nodes and each layer represents the economy/
country. The weighted arcs within each layer reflect the magnitude of directed embodied energy flows between different sectors within the same economy during a specific time period, based on either renewable or non-renewable sources. Similarly, the weighted inter-layer arcs represent directed flows between the same or different sectors
in different countries. By combining the multilayer networks across time periods for the same energy sources (renewable or non-renewable), we can create a temporal multilayer network that captures both the interactions between sectors and countries and their evolution over time, with the aim of identifying critical sectors and economies within the system.

Background: Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) who received supplemental oxygen reported improved symptoms such as increased energy, less breathlessness, and improved quality of life, even though the oxygen therapy was not actually providing any additional therapeutic benefit beyond maintaining adequate oxygen levels.
Aims and objectives: To investigate the impact of the placebo effect on oxygen therapy during the 6-Minute Walking Test (6MWT) in patients with COPD.
Methods: A randomized crossover two-arm study was conducted with 95 patients with COPD (68.4% male, average age 67). All participants underwent baseline assessments, including the Mini-Mental Status Examination, the Modified British Medical Research Council Questionnaire, the Fatigue Severity Scale, and Simple Spirometry. All participants underwent 6MWT, using one medical oxygen (O2) concentrator and another whose molecular filters (MF) had been removed, so patients believed the concentrator was delivering oxygen. The sequence of the first group was ABC (A = Baseline, B =MF, C = O2), while the sequence of the second was ACB. Saturation, heart rate and blood pressure were measured at baseline, at 3’:30’’ and after 6MWT.
Results: A repeated measures ANOVA was performed to compare the effect of oxygen usage on the 6MWT. There was no statistically significant difference in the 6MWT between the two groups (F(2, 1) = 0.113, p = 0.888).
Conclusions: Although the use of oxygen remains an important and effective treatment for maintaining adequate oxygen levels, specific treatments based on beliefs and patients' expectations can improve the healthcare process in COPD.

As the community is acutely aware of, there is a need for new a tool capable to describe macroscopic processes while retaining sufficient detail about the microphysics. We propose a tool designed to handle cross-scale processes: CELESTE3D. CELESTE3D is based on fully kinetic ions and electrons and on a implicit formulation of both field solver and particle mover. The code was designed in the early 1990s and adhered to the most advanced software paradigms of the time. Furthermore the code had general geometry and grid adaptation, a feature key to cross-scale problems. However, the use of the code was limited to vector machines (as the CRAYS of those days and the Earth Simulator now). We report the next step in the development of CELESTE: PARSEK. PARSEK is based on the same algorithmic approach as CELESTE but it has a number of new features: 1) The particle mover and field solver are now relativistic; 2) The software infrastructure is completely new, based on a component-based software architecture using a object-oriented language; 3) All components are fully parallelized using MPI. We present the new code, its benchmark tests and some sample applications.

Settore SECS-P/08 - ECONOMIA E GESTIONE DELLE IMPRESE

Settore IUS/17 - DIRITTO PENALE
Building on Maurizio Catino’s empirical analysis of a number of corporate scandals and disasters, and of the related phenomenon of 'organizational scapegoats', this paper discusses some of the contextual elements - including those related to any given legal system - that can generate or strengthen serious bias in the application of criminal provisions, not only with respect to the evaluation of collected evidence, but, upstream, in the very process of selecting, interpreting, and applying the correct legal rules and principles.

The present note explores some hydrodynamical aspects of the probability current in Schrödinger’s theory based on the observation that the latter shares the same trajectories with the Madelung velocity, whilst exhibiting a regular behaviour. This appears to be useful in analyzing the motion of the zero set of the wave function.

Characterization of the maize lipoxygenase genes in relation to mycotoxigenic fungal resistance.
Lanubile A.
Lanubile, Alessandra
Settore AGR/07 - GENETICA AGRARIA
Mycotoxin contamination of maize kernels by fungal pathogens like Fusarium verticillioides and Aspergillus flavus is a chronic global challenge impacting food and feed security, health, and trade. Maize lipoxygenase genes (ZmLOXs) synthetize oxylipins that play defense roles and govern host-fungal interactions. The current study investigated the involvement of ZmLOXs in maize resistance against these two fungi. A considerable intraspecific genetic and transcript variability of the ZmLOX family was highlighted by in silico analysis comparing publicly available maize pan-genomes and pan-transcriptomes, respectively. Then, phenotyping and expression analysis of ZmLOX genes along with key genes involved in oxylipin biosynthesis were carried out in a maize mutant carrying a Mu transposon insertion in the ZmLOX4 gene (named UFMulox4) together with Tzi18, Mo17, and W22 inbred lines at 3- and 7-days post-inoculation with F. verticillioides and A. flavus. Tzi18 showed the highest resistance to the pathogens coupled with the lowest mycotoxin accumulation, while UFMulox4 was highly susceptible to both pathogens with the most elevated mycotoxin content. F. verticillioides inoculation determined a stronger induction of ZmLOXs and maize allene oxide synthase genes as compared to A. flavus. Additionally, oxylipin analysis revealed prevalent linoleic (18:2) peroxidation by 9-LOXs, the accumulation of 10-oxo-11-phytoenoic acid (10-OPEA), and triglyceride peroxidation only in F. verticillioides inoculated kernels of resistant genotypes. Further studies on lox4 overexpressed mutants generated in our laboratory are already ongoing to confirm the strategic role of this gene in controlling defense responses against mycotoxigenic fungi.

Statistical theory and methods for the analysis of maxima, computed componentwise in a multivariate sample, has been an active research area in the last decade. Under mild assumptions, extreme-value theory justifies modelling random vectors of linearly normalized sample maxima by multivariate max-stable distributions. Various proposals for Bayesian inferential procedures have been formulated in recent years, though they typically disregard the asymptotic bias inherent in the use of max-stable models, incorporating no information on norming sequences in prior specifications for scale and location parameters. The semiparametric empirical Bayesian approach in Padoan and Rizzelli (2022) suitably addresses this point via data-dependent priors. In this contribution we review its consistency properties.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of comorbidities and death worldwide. Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is a comprehensive intervention proven effective in improving COPD patients’ quality of life. However, its benefits often decrease with time because of low motivation, lack of direct surveillance, and low self-awareness. In this scenario, digital technologies can play a key role by allowing more engaging protocols and enabling home-based programs. The cooperation between clinical and technology experts is crucial to develop protocols that are effective and well-accepted by patients. This work aimed at developing and testing a hybrid PR program for patients with COPD based on digital applications that allow the personalization of the intervention, and support the delivery of healthcare services also in the context of continuity of care. Our protocol proved able to improve the patients’ condition, as traditional programs do, paving the way for the adoption of such technologies in the clinical practice.

The aim of this article is to analyze the role of relationships in the internationalization process of space tech startups. After reviewing the recent literature on startups and firm internationalization, we conduct an empirical analysis of Italian space tech startups. We collected 6 semi-structured interviews with startups that activated international marketing activities, and other actors involved in their internationalization process such as an incubator and the national trade agency. Preliminary findings identify the actors involved in the startups’ internationalization and the relationships activated in the process that enhance this process. We also discuss the marketing tools that emerged as key in reaching new markets and customers in the tech space industry, such as trade fairs and digital media.

The pandemic, the Ukrainian war, and the energetic crisis have created a degree of disruption in most industries that is unprecedented also considering the potential for global situation. In this postnormal time, characterized by chaos, a new decision-making approach is required.
Based on this premise, we adopted a Delphi approach to understand how managers are setting companies’ business priorities in the current increasingly complex environment. The paper analyses the relevant trends of digital transformation, circular economy, humanistic management, considering the key actors, resources, and activities required to take new business decisions.

A roundtable discussion and debate will summarize the evidence in favor of and against considering “gait and cognition” as an emerging geriatric syndrome. Specifically, we will discuss whether there is sufficient evidence to support the idea that gait and cognitive impairments among older individuals in the absence of an overt neurological disease represent a distinct phenotype caused by shared mechanisms. Potential clinical applicability of the construct will be discussed.

Commitment to environmental causes is emerging as a fundamental driver of consumption choices, especially for the younger generations. However, studies are missing that delve deeper into how young consumers, particularly Millennials and Gen Zers, dialogically frame their favor and support for sustainable brands. In this paper, we explore how young consumers shape their choices for sustainable brands and products in their social media conversations, which represent the most common ground where sustainable commitments are discussed. We conduct an in-depth netnographic investigation that provides a deep cultural understanding of the system of values, meanings, language, stories, images, and priorities that young consumers associate with sustainable choices. Considering that Millennials and Gen Zers are setting as a top priority to limit the consumption of single-use plastics, our study is set into the communities of plastic-free refillable bottles. Our findings visually map and dig deeper into the specific motivations that young consumers prioritize in conversations when they embrace plastic-free brands. In terms of contribution, our study elaborates on the notion of care as the key priority for young consumers.

In the new Millennium Italian universities have lived many changes deeply reshaping academic institutions. A relevant aspect was the more and more significant need to answer the demand of society and respond the social pressure to accountability through the transfer of knowledge, innovation and technology to economy. It led to an extension of the so-called university Fourth Mission, an instrument dedicated to create spin-offs to share scientific research results with society. The paper investigates the present reality of university spin-offs in Italy by considering their growing number also in the light of their role of an instrument for academic job substitution. In particular, a tool to respond to the current condition of young Italian academic researchers increasingly affected by job offer reduction due to budget constraints, consequent university policies and new management issues.

The characterization of materials includes a plethora of different methods and terminologies, and as such has historically been a challenging field for promoting effective mechanisms of interaction and interoperability among its communities. Within this context, the CHAMEO ontology has the purpose of providing a common modeling framework for materials characterization, in terms of a domain-level ontology under which method-specific, application ontologies in the field may be developed. CHAMEO, based on the CHADA documentation scheme, is part of a larger effort in standardizing materials modeling and scientific activities that has EMMO, the Elementary Multiperspective Material Ontology, as its core. In this regard, this work shows how CHAMEO, via its alignment with EMMO and the exploitation of the latter's constructs and perspectives, can effectively help scientists model the different aspects of the materials characterization processes.

The exploitation of heterosis is key in modern maize breeding to capture
the superior performance of heterozygous genotypes. Here, we developed a
recombinant intercross (RIX) population in maize by crossing pairs of multiparental
MAGIC recombinant inbred lines (RILs) to evaluate the heterosis
across mosaics of eight maize haplotypes. Field phenotyping was performed
on 400 RIX genotypes considering 11 agronomic traits as well as the
resistance to Fusarium Ear Rot (FER), caused by Fusarium verticillioides
(Sacc.) Nirenberg, in 2018 and 2019 in Piacenza, northern Italy. Phenotypic
data showed a broad range of diversity in production and phenology traits
thanks to the high level of allelic diversity available in parental
genomes. The heterotic response of agronomic traits was computed based on
RIL values as mid parent heterosis (MPH) and best parent heterosis (BPH).
Both heterosis measures showed different magnitudes for different traits,
with higher level of heterosis in yield and lower in flowering time,
suggesting effects from partial dominance to over-dominance. No correlation
was observed between phenotypic performance and heterozygosity level of
RIXs for most of the agronomic traits. A preliminary quantitative trait
locus (QTL) mapping detected a number of significant associations with
agronomic traits across all chromosomes. The RIX collection showed a
moderate heritability of FER resistance, and QTL were associated to this
trait as well. The allelic effect estimates by our mapping model indicated
the presence of minor effect QTL with relatively small additive effects on
disease resistance in both years. Our findings confirm the usefulness of
the RIX population to decipher heterotic loci in maize and support
utilizing this resource in future to accelerate crop improvement.

The first Wechsler-Bellevue forms (1939-1946) were translated into Italian in 1957. The WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, 1955) and the WISC (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, 1949) were introduced in Italy in 1974 and 1956 respectively. The aim of this paper is to identify the ways in which the Italian verbal and cultural subtests (particularly the Information and Comprehension subtests) differed from the American version; and to show the attention increasingly paid to cultural diversity.

The villa of Palazzo Pignano, in the southern sector of the ager of Bergamo, was built during the 4th century AD and
then modified in the following century; this context has been the subject of recent excavation work during which
older pre-existing structures have also been exposed.
The proposed intervention aims to offer an overview of the new data regarding the architectural, material and technical-constructive characteristics of the structures referable to the earliest frequentation of the site.
The evidence of the early imperial age is of a punctual nature, however, the exploratory essays of the last years
(2016-2019) have allowed to delineate in a progressive way the presence of a facility active since the second half of
the 1st-early 2nd century AD, living with continuity until the realization of the late antique villa, following renovations
and progressive ampliaments. Some portions of the foundations, with a base plinth made of brick fragments, wing
tiles and rare pebbles, but with an elevation composed of unbaked bricks and perishable material, can be attributed
to the early settlement, as evidenced by a recent find in an exploratory essay. This finding pushes research toward
the study of building techniques in poor materials and to reason about the material, dimensional, and structural characteristics of these older rooms.

Sbattella, Fabio
Settore M-PSI/08 - PSICOLOGIA CLINICA

Morbillo, Parotite, Rosolia e Varicella).
Obiettivi.
IgG anti-HBsAg, anti-Morbillo, anti-Parotite, anti-
negativo <10 mUI/ml), Morbillo (positivo ≥150 mUI/ml,
negativo <150 mUI/ml), Parotite (positivo ≥230 UA/ml,
negativo <230 UA/ml), Rosolia (positivo ≥10 UI/ml,
negativo <10 UI/ml), Varicella (positivo ≥50 mUI/ml,
negativo <50 mUI/ml).
contro Morbillo, Parotite, Rosolia e Varicella, mentre inferiore
al desiderato verso HBV. Pertanto, è stato necessario
procedere, su base volontaria in quanto azione raccomandata,
vaccinazione stessa.
Conclusioni.
in aree dove l’epatite B è endemica.

Background: Food insecurity (FI) is a major public health concern, due to its association with a variety of adverse health outcomes. The aim of this study is to provide a picture of the EU policy response and adherence to the international recommendations in terms of FI mitigation and prevention. Methods: A scoping review was carried out based on PRISMA Extension for scoping reviews method. By using specific queries/ keywords, Pubmed and Scopus were searched and also institutional databases: EUR-Lex, WHO Global Database on the Implementation of Nutrition. The search was supplemented by a review of a list of organizations’ official websites, including Cordis, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund and World Food Programme. Results: The search on PubMed and Scopus produced a list of 8 articles, 3 concerning agriculture policies in EU, 4 related to intervention on the school lunch and 1 focused on the introduction of a tax on unhealthy drinks. Based on the search on EUR-Lex and WHO Global Database on the Implementation of Nutrition, 4 EU-wide statutory policies were collected covering school meals, food loss reduction, food waste prevention and food crisis and humanitarian aid operations. The institutional website’s review returned 18 documents in the form of ‘soft law’ measures, including action plans, action tools and projects. Conclusions: Preliminary findings suggest that currently, at EU level, a coherent specific policy framework on FI is lacking. The policy fragmentation is mainly due to the multidimensional nature of FI, which has interconnections with multiple and different areas of food system-food availability, food accessibility, food safety and food quality and healthiness. The outputs also show that to date EU has failed to adhere to the international recommendations (above all, WHO recommendations) on FI mitigation and prevention. This has significant implications in terms of public health. Key messages: Policies design and implementation have the potential to create living environments conducive to good health and to lead to concrete health gains. Health gains resulting from strategies and policies implementation against FI reduce healthcare costs associated with the treatment of the FI-related diseases.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of face masks used for COVID-19 prevention on emotion recognition in facial expressions. Seventy-two (72) adult participants (48 females, 24 males) attempted to correctly identify different emotions displayed by a female and a male actor’s facial expressions. Simulated emotions included neutrality, happiness, surprise, disgust, sadness, fear, and anger at two levels of intensity, with or without wearing a surgical mask. Accuracy rates of facial expression recognition and response times were collected. The GLM analysis for accuracy revealed a main effect of emotions (F(5,350)=57.47, P<.001) and face masks (without>with) (F(1,70)=338.95, P<.001), as well as a three-way interaction between emotions, masks, and actors (F(5,350)=9.69, P<.001). Disgust was the least recognized emotion, followed by sadness, while hap- piness, anger and surprise were the easiest to identify. The analysis of response times suggested that, when partially covered by a mask, facial expressions can be more ambiguous and difficult to read, and a larger amount of time was required to provide a response. In line with results on accu- racy, sadness was generally the most difficult emotion to identify. Male and female participants had similar response times. Globally, these results show that wearing masks can significantly reduce the ability to detect emotions in facial expressions. However, when emotions are expressed at higher intensity levels, this effect may be mitigated

Identity Discourses in EU-Turkey Relations
Zubani Matilde
Bottaro, G
Zubani, Matilde
Settore SPS/04 - SCIENZA POLITICA
Since the Luxembourg Summit, in 1997, the presence of identity discourses in the debate for and against Turkey's EU accession has increased significantly. In our analysis we draw a distinction on two identity dimensions: cultural and civic. As for the first dimension, we assess how the concepts of 'civilisation' and 'clash of civilisation' are used in the discourse on EU-Turkey relation. Moreover, we examine the three main categories of arguments used to define Turkey’s “Europeanness” from a cultural perspective: geographic, historical, and religious. Moving to civic identity, we address arguments on shared political values. Taking into consideration the importance of speech acts for the construction of identity discourses, through all the analysis relevance is given to the institutional and, more generally, to the political statements by various actors.
The concept of civilisation has been often used either by proponents or opponents of Turkish full membership to the EU. Both groups argue that the EU is a civilisational project. According to the first view, there is only one civilisation which can potentially accommodate everybody: there is not obstacle to Turkey's accession once it proved to be 'civilised', which in this case means to have fulfilled the Copenhagen criteria. Conversely, in the second view, there is a plurality of civilisations which differentiate themselves on historical and religious bases. Consequently, civilisations are mutually exclusive, and the EU is perceived as the representation of the European civilisation, founded on Christianity, Greek antiquity and the values of Enlightenment. In this framework, Turkey, which should belong to the Islamic civilisation, is seen as incompatible with the EU project at no conditions.
Despite the absolute absence of official EU acquis for broad cultural questions, which have not been on the table in the EU-Turkey accession talks since 2005, we observe that the discussion about Turkey's 'cultural fit' is prominent in the political debate. The uneasiness that some EU Member States feel about the prospect of welcoming Turkey has often been directed towards identity disputes on Turkey's Europeanness based on geography, history, and religion. Again, all these arguments have been challenged by those who believe Turkey belongs to Europe both historically and geographically, and by those who believe European identity is based mainly on universal values like human dignity, equality, and justice rather than on religion.
With the decision to nominate Turkey as a candidate for full membership and to start accession negotiations on October 3, 2005, the EU has in practice forsworn the application of the cultural and civilisational criteria for Turkey’s admission, suggesting to favour the ‘cultural diversity approach’. We argue that by embracing Turkey the EU would move beyond the cultural paradigm and transform itself to a geographically defined entity embracing a multiplicity of civilisations. However, as long as Turkey's accession negotiations remain unresolved, the suspicion that the ‘logic of culture’ might influence EU decisions will continue to hover.

Presence of meaning in life has been found to be adaptive during the pandemic (Humphrey & Vari, 2021; Samios et al., 2021), however, no studies were conducted to understand whether meaning in life is related to future perspectives in young adulthood. In the current study both the objective impact and the subjective impact of the COVID-19 pandemic were considered as predictive factors of young adults’ negative future perspectives through the activation of presence and search for meaning in life, in Italy and Portugal. Data were collected from emerging adults (18–35 years) between February and October 2021 via an online survey. Results showed that the objective impact of COVID-19 was not associated to neither meaning in life nor future perspectives in both countries. While the subjective COVID-19 impact was similarly associated in the two countries with both meaning in life and future perspectives, as young adults who were more worried about the pandemic effects, perceived their future more negatively and were engaged in a deeper search for meaning in life. Cross-country differences were found only in the strength of the relations between meaning in life and future perspectives. Specifically, a low presence of meaning was associated to negative future perspectives especially in Italy, while a high search for meaning was associated with negative future perspectives especially in Portugal. The present study has the merit of underlining the importance of considering subjective COVID-related worries and the role of meaning in life in the way young people cope with present and future uncertainties related to the pandemic.

The Stroke Pathway performance assessment is a key quality improvement element in healthcare. The aim of this study was to carry out a retrospective assessment of the Stroke Pathway in a first level Stroke Unit in Northern Italy and the possible impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A retrospective observational study was carried out analysing data from 1/01/2010 to 31/12/2020. Data considered were: case volume and characteristics of patients undergoing intravenous thrombolysis, baseline modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores, Onset-to-Door (OTD), Door-To-Imaging (DTI) and DoorTo-Needle (DTN) Times, mRS score 3 months after the ischemic event onset (3m-mRS) and NIHSS score 24hours after the ischemic event onset (24h-NIHSS). The study also compared the pre-COVID-19 pandemic period (MarchDecember 2019) with the one following it (March-December 2020). Results: During the considered 10 years range, 418 patients underwent pharmacological thrombolysis. Treatment was extended to older patients (mean age from 66.3 to 75.51 years; p = 0.006) and with a higher baseline disability level (from 0.22 to 1.22; p = 0.000). A statistically significant reduction was found for DTN (from 90 to 61minutes average value; p = 0.000), so that in 2019 more than 50% and in 2020 more than 60% of patients were treated within 60minutes (golden hour). Comparing preand COVID-19 pandemic periods, the number of patients remained almost unchanged, but with a significantly higher baseline disability (mRS=1.18 vs 0.72, p = 0.048). The OTD increased from 88.13 to 118.48minutes, although without a statistically significant difference (p = 0.197). Conclusions: The study highlighted the Stroke Pathway positive impact, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, both on healthcare processes and patients’ outcomes. Nevertheless, both of them could be further improved through specific changes of the Pathway hospital phase and health communication actions. Key messages: Stroke Pathway hospital phase (DTN score) could be improved by starting thrombolysis in the diagnostic imaging department to further align with the international guidelines standards. Communication actions should be promoted to improve the Stroke Pathway pre-hospital phase (OTD score) providing the public with essential information to timely recognize stroke signs and symptoms.

Interoception refers to the ability to sense modifications of internal bodily states. The accurate perception of internal states is crucial for self-regulation, as well as for higher-order cognitive-affective processes. Despite increasing attention on interoceptive attentiveness (IAtt), little is known about its neurofunctional correlates and potential objective biomarkers of IAtt performance. 36 volunteers took part in this study and were asked to undergo a heart-beat counting task (HCT), a widely-used IAtt task. Central electrophysiological (EEG) and cardiovascular activity was monitored during both resting-state and HCT. Intracortical sources of EEG signals were estimated via eLORETA. Contrast analyses comparing HCT and resting highlighted higher current density estimates for Alpha frequency during the task, with primary cortical seed in the right parahippocampal gyrus. Regression analyses exploring the association between IAtt scores and task-related changes in intracortical current density during HCT have highlighted a positive association for the Beta frequency bands, with primary cortical seeds in cingulate gyrus and insula. Findings add to available literature by further specifying the electrophysiological signature of interoceptive attentiveness

In an onlife context (Pasta & Rivoltella, 2022), students are challenged by a dynamic reality in which digital media work as connective tissue since augmented reality appears in everyday actions. It allows for investigating the relationship between motor activities, executive functions and exergames from an operational and meta-reflexive perspective (Garbui & Rivoltella, 2023).
In a constantly evolving world, we must consider the role of the body in learning, as indicated by the recent approach to embodiment. An Episode of Situated Learning (ELS) methodology (Rivoltella, 2014) allows for uniting the didactic design with the point of view of the embodied cognition paradigm of the cognitive sciences. On the other hand, physical education is one of the school disciplines where more and better can be learned with the body.
Current scientific evidence suggests a strong relationship between pragmatic-motor skills and executive functions (Barenberg et al., 2011).
Digital technology can enhance teaching and learning, but how must it be studied? The BlazePod is a digital motor game aimed at stimulating the player’s motor skills, and its psychological effects have been studied in physical education school contexts (Quintas, 2020). In order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of this technology’s effects on executive function variables, further information is necessary. In particular, this research focuses on inhibitory control (Houdé, 2020) and working memory. Inhibitory control allows adaptation to changes and choosing information for a response; working memory keeps information active and manipulates it for short-term goals. Additionally, it is essential to integrate this information into ESL didactics for optimal results effectively.
Several studies request studying the psychological effects of didactics more rigorously on education, indicating the limitations of empirical research into education, such as its dominant application to colleges, lack of comparative groups or validity of measures (Dichev & Dicheva, 2017). More experimental empirical research is needed to complement theoretical approaches, especially in formal education contexts (Quintas, 2022).
For all these reasons, the objective of this proposal has been to design the scientific method and the educational intervention to cover the research needs, as well as to study the theoretical compatibility with the actual practical interventions. Specifically, we want to share a quasi-experimental research design based didactically on ELS, psychologically on the embodiment, digitally on augmented reality with the BlazePod, and curricularly on school physical education.

Settore M-STO/01 - STORIA MEDIEVALE
Economy and its Denial: Clare of Assisi and the privilegium paupertatis
Every attempt at monastic reform is also expressed in clear choices of an economic nature, as the experience of St. Francis of Assisi shows: the renunciation of land-based economies, as well as monetary economies, reveals a desire to be inspired by the model of the Gospel and the early Church. Clare’s decision to live according to the Gospel is usually associated with the privilegium paupertatis, a document granted to her and to the community of St. Damiano by Gregory IX. The reasons why such a document was requested are primarily to be found in the history of so-called Female Franciscanism. There were at least two components to it: on the one hand, there were the sorores minores, among whom the community of Clare was located; on the other hand, there were the monasteries founded from 1218 by Cardinal Hugo of Ostia, which were to orient their life according to the forma vitae and the Rule of Benedict written by him. Since 1220 the Cardinal had tried to win Clare and her community over to the new papal monastic system.
After the death of Francis and the election of Cardinal Hugo as Pope Gregory IX, Clare accepted the attitude of the Pope, but in return obtained a document which allowed her not to be assimilated in all points to the »papal« monastic system. The two forms of Female Franciscanism also differed in their conception of poverty: for Francis and Clare it was understood as sanctissima paupertas. Gregory IX and the theologians of his time, on the other hand, saw in poverty a virtue to strive for, a form of asceticism (altissima paupertas). With the privilegium paupertatis, Gregory IX tried to bend the conception of Clare into an ascetic interpretation of poverty, while Clare considered this document fundamental in order to differ from the positions held by the Pope. The privilegium paupertatis allowed her not to have to accept a feudal gift, but it did not forbid her from handling money, especially for the poor. While the cloistered papal nuns were excluded from economic life, in 1217 Clare and her sisters had enough money to purchase a plot of land in Foligno on which a hospice for the poor and sick was built.

Vineyard management cost is significantly affected by selective operations such as winter pruning. This study aimed to fine-tune and test a deep neural network (DNN) based algorithm for detecting pruning regions. Focusing on spur-pruned grapevines, in order to fine tune the DNN, around 1000 RGB images were acquired and pruning target regions ground-truthed. The DNN was tested on 5 vines, 232 frames were acquired and processed in real-time for identifying the regions of interest as potential pruning regions (PPRs). PPRs were then classified depending on wood type, orientation and visibility. True positives (TPs), false positives (FPs) and false negatives (FNs) were identified in each frame. Best detection performance was obtained for visible coplanar simple spurs (recall = 98%) while the recall index was generally lower than 60% when pruning regions (PRs) were not clearly visible. FPs were more frequently associated with old cuts located on permanent organs such as trunks and cordons.

Background: Multichannel magnetocardiographic mapping (MCG) has been validated as an accurate non-invasive method for 3D localization of arrhythmogenic substrates suitable for ablation treatment and intracardiac electrophysiology catheters (1,2). High resolution (HR) MCG-guided multiple simultaneous monophasic action potential (multi-MAP) recording and pacing with a special amagnetic catheter (AC) detect local arrhythmogenic mechanisms (3). Laser photocoagulation (LP) providing more controlled and homogeneous myocardial lesions (4), may be an alternative to radiofrequency (RF) ablation, without unwanted electromagnetic noise effect during real-time MCG.
Purpose: This study aimed to experimentally test the feasibility of simultaneous multi-MAP recording and LP guided by real-time MCG.
Methods: An unshielded 36 channels SQUID system (sensitivity of 30 fT/Hz1/2, at 1 Hz) (CMI, USA) was used to study Langendorff-perfused isolated rabbit heart with MCG (Figure 1A). Four epicardial MAPs were simultaneously recorded (inter MAP distance: 1 mm) with a single multi-MAP AC (bandpass: DC-500 Hz; sampling frequency: 2 kHz) (GE-Prucka Cardiolab). LP was performed with a NdYAG laser (Dornier Medilas 5100) and a catheter system for safe myocardium LP (5). The study was carried out according to NIH guidelines for animal care and use.
Results: MCG imaging of rabbit ventricular magnetic field distribution and inverse source localization with the magnetic dipole model are shown in Figure 1B. The morphology of local HR ventricular multi-MAP signals was compatible with myocardial isotropy (Figure 1C). With appropriate cooling of the optic fiber-tissue interface, no epicardial damage was induced by LP, whereas deeper well defined intramural myocardial lesions were appreciable, of different size as a function of the energy delivered (Figure 1D). Multi-MAP recording was not significantly disturbed by LP. Keeping the Medilas unit at least 5 meters away from the MCG sensors, no electromagnetic artifacts were observed during MCG.
Conclusion: MCG, multi-MAP recording and well-defined LP lesions of ventricular myocardium were simultaneously feasible on Langendorff-perfused isolated rabbit heart, without major electromagnetic interferences, in an unshielded catheterization laboratory.

The trend toward sustainability in business operations and practices in industry stimulated growing interest in research. Numerous recent studies examine the trend towards “green” products, processes and clean technologies and discuss the possibilities to exploit related business opportunities. Reaping the business opportunities appears to require integrating the two areas of sustainability and innovation not only in theory but also in business practices and require of companies to make changes internally as well as externally, in companies’ supply networks (e.g. Brindley & Lynn, 2015). Changing to more sustainable practices implies involvement of different parties and communication among these (Biggeman, Williams & Kro, 2014) and rearranging activities along with developing or recombining resources among different actors within the relevant business networks (Håkansson & Snehota, 1995). This paper focuses on the agri-food sector where sustainability concerns are diffused and lead to developing business practices also to comply with evolving European norms and regulations in the field. Societal, economic and technological changes impact the entire food processing chain, from agricultural production through food processing to the distribution to end consumers (Menrad, 2004). It has been observed that “the evolution of the agri-food system calls for a constant update of the corpus of knowledge in a continuous effort of interpreting and explaining observed behaviors in the industry” (Bonanno, 2017, p. 3). Although there is a considerable body of research on innovation in agri-food business, studies of how innovation for sustainability is actually carried out in this sector have been limited. Recent research argues that an ‘open innovation’ perspective is promising (Medeiros et al., 2016), but the research on the processes involved remains limited, even though it appears to hold significant promise of managerial and policy relevance. Therefore, this paper aims to address the following research questions: 1) How are innovation projects for sustainability initiated, developed and implemented? and, 2) Who are main actors involved in such projects and what changes/adaptations are required?
Empirically the paper is based on direct participation and observation in the projects by one of the paper's authors and six interviews with the agri-food company Orto that operates in the deep-frozen vegetables industry and an institutional actor (agronomist) involved in innovation for sustainability processes in Orto. The interviews have been recorded and transcribed and have been subsequently analyzed by confronting emerging data with previous findings following an abductive logic (Dubois & Gadde, 2002). By analyzing the critical aspects and impulses of these customer-supplier relationships in developing sustainable solutions, we found that sustainability driven projects originate in and are driven by interaction with various actors external to the company. We also found that the sustainability projects are characterized by interactions and involve continuous re-formulating and adapting of the solutions brought about within the frame of the project. Finally, we found that the ‘evolutionary’ dynamics of the sustainability are driven by tensions and controversies about solutions to apply that continuously emerge among various actors involved and that third parties often have a major role. We are bound to argue that such tensions, rather than barriers to implementing sustainable business practices, are in effect the generative mechanism of sustainable practices.

We present a model to study complex physical systems composed by a set of clusters of different chemical species immersed in a matrix with which they interact. The overall model describes the transient of the basic mechanisms governing the processes of interaction in a two-dimensional micrometer size system. At each time step, the continuum (micrometer scale) model computes the macroscopic fields according to the prescribed boundary conditions. The continuum system is discretized with a desired number of uniform computational cells. Each cell contains a number of computational particles which represent the actual particles mixture. The particle-in-cell (discrete) model maps the macroscopic fields from the (continuum) cells to the particles. A molecular dynamics approach is used for computing the chemical reactions among the particles. We present results of a recent application of this approach to the simulation of nanoparticles formation in SHS reactors [1].

The present pilot randomised controlled trial compared the impact of a Mindfulness-based brief intervention conducted in telemedicine (n = 20) for a period of 5-6 sessions of 45 minutes each, for a total commitment of 3 weeks, to a wait-list control (n = 20), involving people who have been previously tested positive for COVID-19, admitted to intensive care or reanimation and subsequently in respiratory rehabilitation following negativization. The General Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Impact of Event Scale (IES), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), State Shame and Guilt Scale-8, Peritraumatic Perceptions of Fear and life threat, Psychological General Well-being Index (PGWBI), respiratory functions, oxygen saturation, haemogasanalysis were detected at baseline, 3 weeks, and 3 months. Semi-structured interviews conducted according to the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach detected the participants' emotional experiences, expectations, and beliefs about their experience of illness. This study showed the potential of an affordable and widely accessible Mindfulness-based brief intervention in clinical practice, offering a view of hospital-territory continuity following the acute phase of COVID-19 disease.

Settore M-PED/03 - DIDATTICA E PEDAGOGIA SPECIALE
Introduzione
all’ecosistema informativo attuale.

Social entrepreneurship is increasingly recognised as an important community response to catastrophes such as ethnic conflict, social issues such as poverty, inequality, and child labour, and environmental challenges such as waste management and climate change (Saebi, Foss, & Linder, 2019; George, Howard-Grenville, Joshi & Tihanyi, 2016a; Sserwanga et al., 2014). In light of the growing literature on social entrepreneurship, and the size and scale of the African continent, surprisingly few studies have engaged with and explored social entrepreneurship in African countries (Rivera-Santos, Holt, Littlewood, & Kolk, 2015; Zoogah, Peng, & Woldu, 2015; Zahra, Gedajlovic, Neubaum, & Shulman, 2009). Our presenter symposium seeks to address two fundamental shortcomings in current organization, management, and entrepreneurship scholarship. First, research in African countries offers the opportunity for greater understanding of how “the diverse, rich life worlds of African people can inform our understanding of management and organization” (AMR, 2021; Kim, Bansal & Haugh, 2019). Second, Africa has been recognized as an important and fertile ground for critically evaluating the relevance of Western theories in non-Western contexts (Nkomo, 2017; Zoogah et al., 2015). Specifically, the learnings derived from a better understanding of how African communities organize local responses to local needs creates opportunities for new insights into how social entrepreneurship seeks to create a better world for communities.

University education plays a crucial role in the development of young individuals, serving as a vital foundation. However, it is not uncommon for there to be a concealed sense of discontentment regarding the quality of services provided by universities. Because of Generation Z (Gen Z) members particular traits, traditional methods to course design are sometimes criticized for being excessively theoretical and disconnected from reality. The suggested set of guidelines reverses the conventional training cycle to solve these problems by beginning with a study of Generation Z students' requirements and preferences. To engage students and close knowledge gaps, the set stresses the value of employing a multimodal strategy that incorporates ad-hoc material, flipped classrooms, massive open online courses (MOOCs), gamification, and imitating reality in a trading room. A case study of a finance course that was developed using these suggestions - and might perhaps serve as the basis for a new university policy that better meets the needs of students - is presented. Conclusions underline the importance to personalize educational programs and teaching methods to the students features and needs in order to optimize learning outcomes.

Unlike ‘deficit models’ emphasizing negative consequences
and immigrants’ maladjustment in countries of resettlement,
the salutogenic perspective focuses on psychosocial resources
and capacities that people and groups can mobilize to face
stressors and challenges. The salutogenic point of view
emerged from ecological and family-oriented migration
studies and led to a greater interest towards relational, longterm,
and protective processes capable of supporting migrant
individuals, families and communities across resettlement
phases.
Using Italian data from the EU-funded MIMY project
(EMpowerment through liquid Integration of Migrant Youth
in vulnerable conditions, Horizon 2020) and referring to a
multidimensional and processual framework on migrants’
integration and vulnerability (Spini et al., 2017), the current
study aimed at collecting and exploring voices, opinions,
beliefs, cultural representations about the meaning of vulnerability (stress and resources) adopting the perspective
of people who migrate. The study deployed a qualitative
methodology based on focus group interviews: 4 FGs
involving TCN male and female migrant youth (age range: 18-
29 years) and 2 FGs involving TNC immigrant parents (age
range: 40-55 years) have been conducted to explore attitudes,
thoughts and opinions about integration and challenges
faced by migrant youth in Italy. Thematic analysis carried
out on FGs transcripts permitted to identify several themes
and subthemes related to conceptualization of vulnerability
and integration (perceived obstacles and resources),
revealing interesting commonalities across participants,
and also underscoring gender and generational differences.
What has helped and hindered over time in building young
migrants’ lives in the context of migration will be discussed
by reference to five main interrelated dimensions (cultural,
linguistic, professional, living conditions, and psychological)
that emerged from the focus group interviews.

The pedagogical potential and social effects associated with the formative assessment have long been taken into account by UNESCO and the Council of Europe in their policy directions including in education and training. Paradigmatic examples of this orientation are Goal No. 4 of the UNESCO 2030 Agenda (Provide quality, equitable and inclusive education and learning opportunities for all) and the design and implementation of the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture by the Council of Europe. The underlying goal that these bodies aim to pursue is social promotion and support for increasing democratization of society as a whole.
During the first phase of the uncontrolled spread of the Sars-Cov-2 virus, in the period of spring 2020, the National School and Training Systems decided on the closure of institutes and the sudden switch to distance learning as measures to counter the contagions and not to completely interrupt teaching and training activities (e. g. in Italy: DPCM March 4, 2020, Art. 1, paragraph 1(g); Departmental Note March 17, 2020, No. 388; DL March 25, 2020, No. 19, Art. 1, paragraph 2(p); DL April 8, 2020, No. 22, converted, with amendments, by L. June 6, 2020, No. 41, Art. 2, paragraph 3; DL May 19, 2020, No. 34; DM June 26, 2020, No. 39; DM August 7, 2020, No. 89). Each school system has organized itself to meet the needs of its teachers, pupils, and families. In most cases, National School Systems have adopted distance education through e-learning or video conferencing platforms (UNESCO, 2020a, 2020b). In this context and in accordance with the path outlined above, UNESCO and the Council of Europe saw fit to encourage the use of assessment in its formative function within distance school activities. The main purpose was to support students' engagement and thus their learning journey (Engzell, Frey, Verhagen, 2020; Huges, 2020).
Beyond the generalized and unanticipated use of formative assessment, the assumption of the latter in a systematic way in the functioning of school systems postulates a set of innovative actions on a large scale, among which it is sufficient to mention, by way of example, the appropriate pedagogical, didactic and docimological training of all teachers as well as the organizational arrangement of school work (Hattie, 2016).
This paper is intended to give an account of the design of a research facility aimed at detecting whether and how teachers used formative assessment during the period of ERT, in order to specify the training needs and the main needs at the level of school work organization.

Abstract
Purpose: In beauty industry sustainability issues are gaining momentum also in light of Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainability is being increasingly and constantly recognized as source of competitive advantage in terms of brand image and profit. Consumers, in particular Millennials and Gen Z are very interested in having a quality product with sustainable and bio characteristics, and are very sensitive to sustainable packaging (Švecová et al., 2020; PwC 2020; Cosmetica Italia, 2021).
Dealing with sustainability issues in beauty industry results in a complex and multi-actor ecosystem made up by different elements, behaviors, and interactions, so in this paper this industry has been considered, according to Service Dominant logic, as a service ecosystem in which actors interact at micro, meso and macro level and in which tensions could arise (Vargo and Lusch, 2017; Hahn et al., 2015; Smith and Lewis, 2011)
Considering sustainability in the beauty industry requires to address multiple environmental, economic and social goals at different levels of the services ecosystem (Elkington, 1997).
The aim of this paper is to recognize current tensions arising at the different levels of this service ecosystem when actors characterized by different worldviews interact and integrate resources and to address tensions and paradoxes between economic, environmental and social goals.
Design, methodology, approach: In order to achieve the aims of the paper and coherently with the complexity of the issue, the study adopts a qualitative methodology: the study has been conducted in a real context through face-to-face interviews with multi-level actors of the beauty industry. It consists of 29 semi-structured interviews with key informants at different levels of the service ecosystem. Interviews were carried out between April 2021 and November 2021.
Data from interviews have been triangulated with those deriving analysis of secondary data and with data deriving from participant observations (Eisenhardt, 1989; Yin, 2018)
Findings: Sustainability is driving the evolution of Italian beauty service ecosystem and findings highlight that resource integration and actors’ engagement and interactions are linked to the presence of shared worldviews. Data also show that when misalignments in worldviews generate tensions between the different actors that could be overcome trough a holistic vision of sustainability and trough the implementation of new innovative practices. The proposition of shared practices and KPIs for the managers could enhance the creation of new worldviews and institutions.
Discussion and conclusion: This paper contributes both at a theoretical and managerial level to a better understanding of the tensions and paradoxes linked to the sustainable transition of beauty industry. It identifies the main issues that researchers, managers and policy makers could address to support the sustainable evolution of beauty service ecosystem and to investigate existent tensions and how to manage them in a paradoxical way also in light of Sustainable Development Goals.

Recent decades in Italy have seen a very rapid expansion of urbanisation in terms of physical assets, while
demographics have remained stable. Both the characteristics of Italian soil and anthropic development, along with
repeated global climatic stress, have made the country vulnerable to floods, the intensity of which is increasingly
alarming. The combination of these trends will contribute to large financial losses due to property damage in the
absence of specific mitigation strategies.
The present study focuses on the province of Sondrio in Northern Italy (area of about 3,200 km2), which is home
to more than 180,000 inhabitants and the population is growing slightly. It is clearly a hot spot for flood exposure,
as it is primarily a mountainous area where floods and flash floods hit frequently. The model we use for assessing
potential flood damage determines risk scenarios by overlaying flood hazard maps and economic asset data. In
Italy, hazard maps are provided by Regional Authorities through the Hydrogeological System Management Plan
(PAI) based on EU Flood Directive guidelines. The PAI in the study area includes both the large plain and the
secondary river system and considers three hazard scenarios of Low, Medium and High Frequency associated with
return periods of 20, 200 and 500 years and related water levels.
By an overlay of PAI maps and residential areas, visualized on a GIS, we determine which existing built-up
areas are at risk for flood according to each scenario. Then we investigate the value of physical assets potentially
affected by floods in terms of market values, using the database of the Italian Property Market Observatory (OMI),
and in terms of reconstruction costs, by considering synthetic cost indexes of predominant building types (from
census information) and PAI water height.
This study illustrates a methodology to assess flood damage in urban settlements and aims to determine general
guidelines that can be extended throughout Italy. The final objective will be to analyse how the loss prospective
can change when mitigation measures, including actions to reduce the flood hazard and strategies to prevent
potential consequences, are implemented. Flood impacts and the corresponding value of mitigation measures will
be assessed by means of a cost–benefit analysis in accordance with the EU Floods Directive.

INTRODUCTION: Listening to self-selected motivational music (Terry, 2020) during aerobic exercise may induce an excita- tory stimulus on physiological parameters (Ballman, 2021), such as the heart rate (HR), in correlation with exercise intensi- ty. However, the effect of music on the recovery phase seems to present an entirely new area of research in the available literature, particularly regarding short-time recovery (Karageorghis, 2012). The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of self-selected motivational music on HR during recovery.
METHODS: Forty university students (age 22.7±2.6 yrs; BMI 21.8±2.5 kg·m-2; V̇O2max 39.7±7.9 mLO2·kg-1·min-1) per- formed different training sessions with (+M) and without (-M) self-selected motivational music. They were divided into three percentile categories (high, average and low) according to their cardiorespiratory fitness level (V̇O2max), assessed by a submaximal cycling direct test. During each training session, two 6-minute square-wave cycling bouts were per- formed, interspersed with 10 min of recovery, at two different intensities: 60% of V̇O2max (Mod) and 90% of V̇O2max (Vig). Each condition was replicated during two different moments of the day, morning (MO) and evening (EV), for a total of four training sessions. HR was continuously monitored in order to analyse HR peak during exercise (HRpeak), HR at the 1st minute of recovery (HRrec) and the difference between HRpeak and HRrec (ΔHR%).
RESULTS: For the entire group of subjects, no influence of music or time of the day was found. Subjects with high and aver- age V̇O2max obtained a significantly (p<0.05) faster recovery when compared with those with low V̇O2max, inde- pendently of music condition (high V̇O2max: EV+M 12,4±4,4; EV-M 12,4±4 ΔHR%; average V̇O2max: EV+M 10,7±3,9; EV-M 10,8±4,2 ΔHR%; low V̇O2max: EV+M 6,3±2,8; EV-M 5,7±3,4 ΔHR%). At Mod intensity, subjects with high V̇O2max, inde- pendently of the time of the day, obtained significantly greater HRpeak and HRrec values in +M condition compared to -M (HRpeak: MO+M 138.4±11.7; MO-M 136.5±12.6; EV+M 138±8.9; EV-M 134.7±8.3 bpm, p=0.0278; HRrec: MO+M 118.8±11.1; MO-M 119.5±15.5; EV+M 120.2±9.9; EV-M 116.9±8.9 bpm, p=0.0364). In general, listening to motivational music during recovery phase does not affect ΔHR%. No differences emerged for Vig condition.
CONCLUSION: Untrained subjects have a slower recovery phase compared with more trained subjects, and listening to music after the workout doesnt help bridge the gap. Moreover, listening self-selected motivational music, during aerobic exercise and during recovery, in trained subjects, seems to negatively affect recovery capacity, independently of the time of the day.
