Der Bote vom Gardasee, founded in 1900 on Lake Garda’s riviera as a local paper for the German-speaking guests who were by then flocking to lake’s renowned spas and published weekly, without interruption, until 1914, provides, through its articles, an invaluable record of the process of transformation that the young Kingdom of Italy was undergoing in those early years of the century. The present work investigates the views of the German newspaper concerning a particular aspect of the new Italy, which was the Catholic world in its at times fruitful, at times dramatic, confrontation with modernity and highlights how the image of the Catholic world conveyed by Der Bote vom Gardasee was closely connected not only to the liberal culture of the time but also to the publishing history of the German newspaper, with the different personalities of its chief editors as well as with their acquaintance with some of the protagonists of Italian political life at the time, such as Giuseppe Zanardelli, who was a frequent guest on Lake Garda, in his villa in Maderno.
