Facilitating oral interaction between “native” and “non native” speakers of French is the major challenge for the teaching of French as a Foreign Language in contemporary society which are characterized by erasing of borders, intermingling of populations and multilingualism. According to the context and the aims pursued, unconditional adherence to the “standard” ideal of pronunciation should be mitigated and adapted to new circumstances. Dealing with adult multilingual learners, the authors recommend a reflexive approach for integrating specific features of foreign pronunciation as well as a selection of essential phonetic characteristics for communication effectiveness. A first experience shows the interest of this approach; specific tools are suggested for the renewal of teaching of oral skills.
