The essay deals with the story of Catholic missions in the non-European world, focusing on the case of India between the 19th and 20th centuries. It is a long process of opening up the Catholic Church and its approach with cultural and religious alterities in which to transmit the Christian message. The case of India is emblematic for the particular social order, founded on the traditional caste system, left in place despite British domination for over two centuries. The caste society represents a non-secondary obstacle also for the formation of an indigenous clergy, so much so as to push the Jesuits to change their strategy with respect to the Chinese experience, founded instead on the relationship with the educated classes, and to choose the "pariahs" - excluded from the caste society - as a field of evangelization. This is an experience that has had an important impact on missionary strategies, forced to confront also the strong English colonial power.
