In the paper it is assumed that German particles can be treated as markers of "connectives", i.e. relations connecting individuals to text and situation. These coherence relations of higher order are responsible for the congruity between the various (linguistic and non-linguistic) factors of a speech event. As a result of an analysis of text sequences taken from a written corpus, particles occur as typical markers of interaction; their role as indicators of propositional attitudes is less frequent. For this reason, it appears reasonable to consider particles as a kind of discourse markers, whereas the (largely used) label “modal particles” (“Modalpartikeln”) seems less justified.
