Abstract

the characterization of a novel yeast mitochondrial Mg2+ exporter adds one small tile to the mosaic of the complex cellular Mg2+ homeostasis, and confirms once again just how incredibly important and versatile it is. These findings show how basic research paves the way to translational implications. Mg2+ deficiency is implicated in an ever-increasing number of pathologies. If the existence of an analogous rescue mechanism could be confirmed in humans, such a finding might be exploited in the design of innovative, therapeutic strategies.
