Abstract

J.H. Newman -- before and after his conversion to Roman Catholicism -- had a great interest in music, being an almost professional violinist, and particularly in Church music. Opposing the "à la mode" medievalism, he refused to see Gregorian chant as the only good Church music. He was also interested in linguistic issues concerning the texts of Latin liturgy, such as pronunciation and accent of words.
