The figure of the emperor Constantine I, for whose actions the Dante's "Divine Comedy" provides one assessment, is instead unanimously exalted or defended in 17th and 18th century Italian literature. In particular, two genres in which Constantine is the protagonist are the heroic poem and the tragedy. In the first, 17th-century authors (Biffi, Grisaldi, Tronsarelli, Testi, de Notariis) appear to incorporate the invitation contained in Tasso's "Dialoghi", which pointed to the first Christian emperor as a hero to celebrate, and refer mainly to the model of "Gerusalemme liberata". On the contrary, well into the 19th century tragedies concerning Constantine do not deal with political and military events, but with a family affair - the death sentence decreed by the sovereign for his son Crispus, slandered by his stepmother Fausta; the archetype is "Crispus" in Latin by the Jesuit Bernardino Stefonio, printed in 1601, a European drama. Finally, the article examines "I fasti sacri" by Sforza Pallavicino, written between 1630 and 1634, presenting a Constantine less bound to the legendary aspects of hagiography and ecclesiastical propaganda and more respectful of historical reality.
