Fermenti antigesuitici nel Mezzogiorno settecentesco

This essay studies features and characteristics of anti-Jesuitism in the provinces of Southern Italy in the mid-eighteenth century. More specifically, it analyzes an armed revolt of the students of the seminary of Chieti against the Jesuits who taught in the institute and the diffusion, in the town itself, of manuscript and printed satires against the Company, which sharply criticized the teaching methods of the Jesuits, and accused them of dubious morals. After a criminal trial in the court of Chieti in 1757, the case ended with the imprisonment of the laymen implied in the circulation of the satires, whereas similar measures do not seem to have been taken against the clerics guilty of the rebellion. In regards to the Jesuits, they were deprived of teaching in the seminary, which they had kept in an unchallenged and virtually uninterrupted way since the beginning of their settlement in Chieti (1593). Given the uproar that the affair caused, and the effects it produced, the case (hitherto virtually unknown) may be considered as one of the most important premises of the mid-eighteenth century expulsion of the Jesuits from the Kingdom of Naples.

Il saggio studia forme e caratteri dell’antigesuitismo nella provincia del Mezzogiorno alla metà del XVIII secolo, attraverso l’analisi di un caso locale, cioè una rivolta armata dei chierici del seminario di Chieti contro i gesuiti che insegnavano nell’istituto, a cui seguì la divulgazione di satire manoscritte e a stampa contro la Compagnia, che mettevano alla berlina i metodi di insegnamento dei gesuiti, e li accusavano di dubbia moralità, e che ebbero larga diffusione fra le classi colte cittadine. Dopo la celebrazione di un processo penale presso la Regia Udienza di Chieti nel 1757, la vicenda si concluse con la detenzione per alcuni mesi di alcuni fra i responsabili laici (non sembrano viceversa emessi provvedimenti analoghi a carico degli ecclesiastici), ma anche con la rimozione dei gesuiti dagli incarichi di docenza nel seminario, che essi avevano mantenuto in maniera incontestata e praticamente ininterrotta fin dalle origini del loro insediamento a Chieti (1593). Alla luce del clamore che la vicenda suscitò, e degli esiti che produsse, il caso (finora praticamente ignoto) può essere considerato come uno dei più significativi prodromi dell’espulsione tanucciana del 1767.
