Differences and inequalities among individuals and human group have always represented a central topic in the sociological tradition: each human community embed various differences that tend inevitably to transform themselves into social inequalities. In the last years, this topic has gained a centrality in the political agenda of European countries, making the sociological thought a precious repertory for the understanding and the management of those phenomena which pivot the idea of a society as a “system of differences”, in its intertwining with the plot of social inequalities. The volume presents the fundamental concepts and sociological theories concerning the topic of social differences and social inequalities, focusing the attention on the more recent perspectives, and placing the analysis within a European and international framework. The first part describes processes involved in the social construction of differences, their government, their transformation into inequalities and their institutionalization; the contrast of social inequalities, social stratification and social mobility. The second part focus the attention on differences based on gender, age, ethnicity and sexual orientation. The third part takes into consideration the main fields of differentiation in the contemporary society; the educational system, the labour market, the organizations, the family, the political system, the welfare system, the media system, the social control system, new technologies.
