The essay is an issue poorly addressed by contemporary historiography: Italy's policy towards Africa in the years of decolonization. Over the sixties and seventies years, while mature perceptions of a colonial crisis, considered irreversible, emerging forces of different orientation in different directions solicit a new commitment to the newly independent countries and their leaders, experimenting with new roles and interventions not only in the former colonies of the Horn of Africa, but also in different areas of sub-Saharan Africa, up to the development of a policy of cooperation, within the new euro-African relations established with the Treaty of Rome of 1957. In this context, it develops the involvement of new actors and politicians of different orientation, which in the name of party affiliation or institutional form, addressed a major challenge in the new season of Africa. Next to them, it also gives a new projection by the religious of the Holy See, youth movements of solidarity and missionary organizations, under the impetus of the Second Vatican Council.
