Brunate tra Eclettismo e Liberty. La villeggiatura progettata dal 1890 al 1940

The analitic study detects and records the historic villas and hotels in Brunate, a small "leisure city" built between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century as an holiday resort overlooking Lake Como. Through its completeness it reveals a precious cultural track, and it is able to understand the changes occurred on the territory in the passage of the century. While the study identifies the various types of housing that, together with the gardens, make up the "place", the research broaden the architectural, social, economic context characterizing the cultural reference environment. The redefinition of the landscape that Brunate concurs in building, is part of a larger phenomenon that touches the shores of Lake Como. The strongly developing industrialization and the growth of the tourism in the middle class are the factors which have led to this transformation, and that have determined the construction of new connections as the Gotthard Tunnel, the network of Northern Railway, the Lake Como navigation system, the myth of the funicular up to promote a new way to travel the country with the support of new associations such as the Alpine Club and the Italian Touring Club. The rationalization of the principle of energy fits together neatly with the effervescent spirit of the emerging middle class, that is the true protagonist of this historical period, as it grows and enfranchises in the climate of the Great Exhibition. The middle class imposes its choices in the construction of the homes according to an oscillation of taste that goes from the most opulent Eclecticism to the most flexible Liberty style identifying in the mansion and in all its typological range, a privileged topic for the architectural debate and often offering it contributions of quality. As well as being an instrument of interpretation of the territory, the volume is essential for a systematic conservation policy.

Lo studio analitico che rileva e censisce le ville storiche e gli alberghi di Brunate, piccola “città loisir” sorta tra la fine dell’Ottocento e l’inizio del Novecento come luogo di villeggiatura affacciato sul lago di Como, recupera nella sua compiutezza una traccia culturale preziosa, in grado di interpretare le trasformazioni avvenute sul territorio nel tragitto che accompagna il passaggio del secolo. Mentre lo studio individua le varie tipologie abitative che insieme ai giardini vanno a costituire la costruzione del “luogo”, la ricerca si allarga al contesto architettonico, sociale, economico che caratterizza l’ambito culturale di riferimento. La ridefinizione del paesaggio che Brunate concorre a costruire fa parte di un più vasto fenomeno che tocca le rive del lago di Como. L’industrializzazione in forte sviluppo e il primo turismo della classe medio borghese sono i fattori che stanno all’origine di questa trasformazione e che determinano la costruzione di nuove vie di collegamento come il traforo del Gottardo, la rete delle Ferrovie Nord, i collegamenti di navigazione sul Lario, il mito della funicolare fino a promuovere un nuovo modo di percorrere il territorio con il supporto di nuove associazioni quali il Club Alpino o il Touring Club Italiano. La razionalizzazione di quel principio di energia è perfettamente coincidente allo spirito effervescente della emergente borghesia, vera protagonista di questo periodo storico, che cresce e si emancipa nel clima delle Grandi Esposizioni. Essa s’impone con le sue scelte nella costruzione delle dimore secondo un’oscillazione del gusto che va dall’Eclettismo più sfrenato al più duttile stile Liberty individuando nella villa e in tutta la sua gamma tipologica un tema privilegiato per il dibattito architettonico e spesso offrendo ad esso contributi di qualità. Il volume oltre ad essere uno strumento interpretativo del territorio è essenziale per un’organica politica di conservazione.
