The teacher's portfolio is a new tool, recendy introduced by the Moratti Reform on a voluntary basis, for professional self-monitoring. It is still little known and little used by the majority of teachers in Italy, becausemany of them are opposed to the idea. Notwithstanding this, it is useful approach for facilitating reflection on one's own role and skills as a theacher, because of its potential for encouraging professional documentation and a sense fo orientation. A group of primary school theachers has been committed since 2002 to the completion of the portfolio in order to reflect on the stages of their careers. Through an alalisy of this material the chapter intends to derive a framework for the teacher profession based on the various phases of job development. A particular emphasis is laid on the link between career development and the main changes observed at three levels, that is personal, by the community of professionals and by the school organization. Following this analisys, the question aries of how to promote, trhough riflective practices and istruments, the implementation of differentation among teachers without introducing new forms of hierarchies.
