In this book Cunningham takes the distancences from ultra-darwinism (represented by scientists such as Richard Dawkins) as well as from creationism (according to the view of the "intelligent design"): both of them are ideologies based on an idea of God very similar to the one painted by William Paley, who identifies God with the divine designer of the natural world. A very similar concept is used by ultra-darwinists and creationists in order to deny or affirm God's existence. To this position, Cunningham opposes that of Aquinas: God does not remove the contingency from the natural causes, nor He impose any necessity on them, thus the doctrine of creation ex nihilo leaves intact the explanation provided by science and explores the conditions of possibility for which the being exists, conditions without which the same science could not exists.
