In late 18th century Europe, economists were engaged in analysing the mechanism that permits the organization of individual and social attitudes into a systematic framework. They expressed this idea by stressing in different ways the role of natural law, government, individual effort and enterprise, and classes, and attributing a wide range of meaning to the espression 'well-being' found in literature all over Europe. The work of Pietro Verri (1728-1797) occupies a relevant place in eighteenth-century Milanese, Italian and European traditions: he expressed the idea of 'ben vivere' as the desire to satisfy needs and to improve the quality of life. He analysed production, domestic and external trade, balance of production and consumption, money, and rules as means towards a better economic system and civil society through economic and fiscal policies. These interrelated concepts are analyzed in numerous books, articles, notes, etc. which were written and published by Verri, and in material which he left unpublished in his lifetime; these documents are now available, collected and commented in the second volume of the "Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Pietro Verri"
Il lavoro di Pietro Verri occupa un rilevante spazio nella tradizone del pensiero economico europeo del '700: egli espresse l'idea di "ben vivere" come desiderio di soddisfare i bisogni e di migliorare la qualità di vita. Questi concetti interelati fra di loro sono analizzati in numerose opere di Verri e in materiali non pubblicati fino all'Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Pietro Verri, in particolare nel II volume corredato di pregevoli commenti.
