Ugo Bernasconi's strictly divisionist works represent only a small part of his early artistic activity. To be exact, only two paintings made entirely with this technique are known: Alta Valle del Piave (1899) and Fumi sulla Senna (circa 1900). Yet Bernasconi's connection to Divisionism is far more complex than this simple consideration might suggest. From his years of study first with Giovanni Sottocornola and later with Eugéne Carrère in Paris, to his acquaintance with the Divisionist painter Grubicy de Dragon, the essay shows how Divisionism was an area of formation for Ugo Baernasconi, but also an attitude present in all his painting, discernible in the nuance, the subdued tones and the corpuscular brushstrokes.

Abstract
