La coscienza degli altri in noi. Pirandello bricoleur e la filosofia morale di Alfred Fouillée

This article aims to recover an unknown source used by Luigi Pirandello, that is the essay Fondemens psychologiques et métaphysiques de la moralité by Alfred Fouillée, appeared in the magazine «Revue des Deux Mondes» on September 15th, 1889. According to the French philosopher, every man is called upon to selflessly «realize» his neighbour in himself, «seeing him the way he sees himself», «feeling him the way he feels himself», «wanting him to be the way he wants himself to be», in order to make contact with an «universal being» that overtops him. Since the article Sincerità e arte («Il Marzocco», March 7th, 1897), Pirandello purloins keywords and sentences from Fouillée’s essay, sometimes even paraphrasing whole textual portions. In this way, he phagocytes a doctrine that inspires him, both in the production of short stories and novels (Quand’ero matto..., Stefano Giogli, uno e due, Si gira…), and in the theoretical processing (especially Illustratori, attori e traduttori). Therefore, the rediscovery of the Fondemens can be an important contribution to the study of Pirandellian aesthetics. It allows to rethink the dynamics of humourism, the genesis of the character and more generally the mechanism of artistic creation in the works of the Sicilian author.

Il contributo intende portare alla luce una fonte ignota di Pirandello, il saggio Fondemens psychologiques et métaphysiques de la moralité del filosofo Alfred Fouillée, apparso sulla «Revue des Deux Mondes» il 15 settembre 1889. Secondo il filosofo francese, ciascuno è chiamato a «realizzare» altruisticamente in sé il suo prossimo, «vedendolo com’esso si vede», «sentendolo com’esso si sente», «volendolo com’esso si vuole», per entrare in contatto con un «essere universale» che lo sorpassa. Fin da Sincerità e arte, uscito sul «Marzocco» del 7 marzo 1897, Pirandello trafuga da Fouillée parole-chiave e frasi, arrivando alla parafrasi di intere porzioni testuali. Fagocita così una dottrina che lo ispira tanto nella produzione novellistica e romanzesca (Quand’ero matto..., Stefano Giogli, uno e due, Si gira…), quanto nell’elaborazione teorica (Illustratori, attori e traduttori specialmente). La riscoperta dei Fondemens aggiunge insomma un importante tassello allo studio dell’estetica pirandelliana, consentendo di ripensare le dinamiche dell’umorismo, la genesi del personaggio e più in generale il meccanismo della creazione artistica nell’opera dell’autore siciliano.
