The relative weight that should be given to the various sources on Valentinian Gnosticism is a matter that constantly needs to be rethought. There are sources that have been largely neglected, suc as the document in Epiphanius Panarion 31.5-6, tha so-called Lehrbrief ('Doctrinal Letter'), an indipendent account of the Pleroma which several scholars have regarded as a late, even a degenerate version of the Valentinian system. This paper reintroduces this document into discussion about the early development of Valentinian doctrine, and produces arguments that it was known already by Irenaeus (165 AD), who may have used it (or a similar text) as one of his sources.
