The conventional interpretation of English Reformation used to present it as a swift and straightforward process, leading in a few decades to an inevitable conclusion: the defeat of the “Catholic superstition” and the victory of Protestantism, ultimately sanctioned by the legislation of 1559. A revisionist stream, born in the 1980s, dismantled this traditional view: many scholars nowadays consider English Reformation as a slow and tortuous process, characterized by opposition and resistance of the faithful, especially in rural areas, to the diffusion of Protestant precepts.
