Jordan’s Christians, or the Jordanian Christians, were an essential and original component of the country’s socio-political landscape well before the foundation of the Hashemite state. The condition of Christians in contemporary Jordan has frequently been described as ‘Jordan, Kingdom of happy Christians’. The relative lack of interest in Jordanian Christianity may be attributed to the fact that the Jordanian Christian communities enjoy a calm and stable existence in the small Hashemite kingdom, at least compared to such unstable countries as Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.

Abstract

Jordan’s Christians, or the Jordanian Christians, were an essential and original component of the country’s socio-political landscape well before the foundation of the Hashemite state. The condition of Christians in contemporary Jordan has frequently been described as ‘Jordan, Kingdom of happy Christians’. The relative lack of interest in Jordanian Christianity may be attributed to the fact that the Jordanian Christian communities enjoy a calm and stable existence in the small Hashemite kingdom, at least compared to such unstable countries as Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.
