This article experimentally investigates the similarities and the differences between German and Italian native speakers' interpretation of emotional speech. The empirical data obtained from an identification and discrimination test carried out with simulated emotions give evidence both of universal and of language-specific perceptual habits. These results may be interlingually and interculturally relevant for future phonetic research in the fields of Second Language Acquisition and Foreign Language Learning.

Abstract

This article experimentally investigates the similarities and the differences between German and Italian native speakers' interpretation of emotional speech. The empirical data obtained from an identification and discrimination test carried out with simulated emotions give evidence both of universal and of language-specific perceptual habits. These results may be interlingually and interculturally relevant for future phonetic research in the fields of Second Language Acquisition and Foreign Language Learning.
