Abstract

The subtle social and religious equilibria established between the 15th and 17th century in Malonno (Brescia), one of the neglected capitals of the iron economy in Valcamonica, are at the center of this challenging essay by Giacomino Ricci and the two appendices signed by Gianmarco Cossandi and Alessia Cotti. The work moves against the current of the Camonica historiography, preferring the effort of the punctual documentary reference to the diffusional cut. The data and opinions of others are subjected to a critical reading through a rigorous exercise of divergent thinking. This allowed to advance new and unexpected hypotheses. The image of Malonno that follows is that of an active and radically integrated community in the historical, social and economic events of a territory extended far beyond the borders of the Valcamonica. Many aspects previously ignored or superficially mentioned emerge: the influences from Bergamo, the close link with Vezza d'Oglio, the on-site existence of diversified monastic interests, the presence of the Dominican Inquisition. Furthermore, the analysis of the events linked to the transfer of the parochial title from Santa Maria Assunta to San Faustino reveals unexpected complexity and sheds new light on the processes of application of the Decreta of Carlo Borromeo.
