Donne e studi scientifici nel Settecento bresciano

Titolo: Donne e studi scientifici nel Settecento bresciano
Autori: Marco Zanini
Abstract: This paper explores the access of women to scientific education and practice in 18th-century Brescia (Italy), within the broader context of the Enlightenment debate on female intellectual equality. Starting from the famous 1723 dispute at the Accademia dei Ricovrati in Padua, the study traces the intellectual journeys of several Brescian women, most notably Diamante Medaglia Faini (1724–1770), who transitioned from poetry to Euclidean geometry and mathematics under the tutelage of Count Giambattista Suardi.
The research also analyzes the pedagogical theories of contemporary male intellectuals, such as Filippo Mazzuchelli and Giuseppe Colpani, highlighting the tension between the recognition of female talent and the social pressure to maintain feminine grace and domestic roles. Furthermore, the essay investigates the practical impact of scientific progress on noble families, documenting the adoption of variolation (smallpox inoculation) and the application of Giovanni Battista Morgagni’s anatomical-clinical method. By examining archival documents, private correspondence, and rare 18th-century publications, this work provides a comprehensive overview of how scientific culture reshaped the daily lives and intellectual identities of women in a key province of the Republic of Venice.

Understanding Peace Economics

Titolo: Understanding Peace Economics
Autori: Raul Caruso
Abstract: This chapter seeks to develop a definition of Peace Economics. A clear and precise definition is essential to develop a workable economic approach to peacebuilding through economic policy instruments, as well as to properly understand the economic costs and benefits of peace. The chapter proceeds by outlining the main pillars of peace economics: (i) the theoretical approach proposed by Boulding concerning the interplay among threat, exchange, and integrative systems; (ii) the consequent allocation of resources between productive and unproductive activities; (iii) the economic impact of military commitment, which generates substantial long-run losses for societies; (iv) the role of deterrence, traditionally regarded as the dominant framework shaping state policies; and (v) the key elements required for a normative approach to peace economics.

Autori: Pregnolato, Simone
Abstract: This essay presents a new, finally scholarly edition of the parchment leaf whose recto contains ten ancient cooking recipes, currently catalogued as Venice, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Lat. XIV 232 (4257), nr. 142 (= Ve). Although highly fragmentary, this manuscript is one of the witnesses to the so-called culinary tradition of the «Twelve diners», against which the ten preserved recipes are compared. A paleographic analysis has now assigned this fragment a revised date, placing the composition of the recipes in the last quarter of the 14th century. This re-dating is made possible by identifying the hand that wrote the recipes as the hand M1 present in the manuscript Venice, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Lat. XIV 223 (4340), a codex associated with Giovanni Dondi dall’Orologio (ca. 1330-1388), who was virtually the sole – though not autograph – transmitter of his Rime and Epistole, and who certainly came from a milieu very close to Dondi himself. The article is enriched with a linguistic note that attempts to distinguish the Tuscan elements from those of the Veneto variety present in the Ve fragment.
