Titolo: Standards: shared rules or tools of power? Technical standardization and the evolution of business and economy in the contemporary age
Autori: gianpiero fumi; fabio lavista
Abstract: Il numero monografico comprende articoli di Luca Andreoni, Malin Dahlström, Igor Goñi-Mendizabal, Francesca Sanna e Dirk Wiegand.
Abstract: This special issue, featuring articles by Luca Andreoni, Malin Dahlström, Igor Goñi-Mendizabal, Francesca Sanna, Dirk Wiegand, addresses the role of standardization in the contemporary economy and its historical development. Modern markets rely on a complex system of rules, technical specifications, and guidelines produced by numerous organizations and experts. Although often voluntary and largely invisible to final users, standards regulate product features, production processes, safety requirements, and quality, thereby structuring economic activity and market coordination. From the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries onward, industrialization, technological change, and the expansion of international trade led to the creation of national and international standardization bodies and to the rapid proliferation of formal technical norms.

Bridging Theoretical Linguistics and Automated Language Processing: Emerging Synergies and Advances

Titolo: Bridging Theoretical Linguistics and Automated Language Processing: Emerging Synergies and Advances
Autori: Lenci Alessandro; Tamburini Fabio; Passarotti Marco; Sprugnoli Rachele
Abstract: In recent years, Natural Language Processing (NLP) has gone through a radical breakthrough due to the success of Large Language Models (LLMs). These models have demonstrated that an unsupervised inductive approach, based on processing large amounts of raw data, can achieve extraordinary accuracy rates in many NLP-related tasks. This progress seems to have reduced the role of theoretical linguistics in computational approaches to linguistic analysis. For instance, metalinguistic annotation, a central element in supervised learning, which traditionally relies on established linguistic theories, has lost its core place in developing trained models for different NLP tasks.
In this context, a closer dialogue between theoretical and computational linguistics becomes essential to integrate theoretical and practical perspectives, bridging the gap between these two approaches to language study. This is particularly important for both the practical implementation of linguistic theories in computational models and the theoretical interpretation of results produced by NLP systems. This special issue of the Italian Journal of Computational Linguistics aims to bridge this gap by exploring the emerging synergies between theoretical linguistics and computational linguistics and the implications these have for the future of the two approaches.

Autori: Giorgio Crescenza; Stefano Pasta; Elena Zizioli
Abstract: The contribution focuses on hate speech and manifestations of violence, highlighting the urgency of adequate pedagogical and educational responses in a complex and unpredictable social context. From this perspective, the authors analyse how hatred and violence, also spread through digital platforms and with onlife manifestations, affect not only society, but also school environments, making educational responses essential. These responses must include the promotion of a new language and different forms of communication. It is the school that plays a key role in setting up a space for inclusion and dialogue. Despite punitive measures, it is necessary to support preventive actions to educate to respect and value differences. Ultimately, it highlights the need for a pedagogy of encounter, based on languages and practices capable of opposing the spread of hate, in a time when the boundaries between online and offline are increasingly blurred.
